Development update: March 2016
Through my employer RCG, I’ve just put out a research piece giving 2017 as the first time that Auckland will build more attached homes (apartments, terraces) than detached houses.* This is one milestone, but really it’s just one of the ways in which Auckland is changing to become more city-shaped, as Patrick puts it.…
Lightpath hits 100k
A little celebration as our favourite pink path has reached a new milestone today with now more than 100,000 trips made across it, just four months after opening.
What’s more, data from Auckland Transport shows that on a monthly basis Te Ara I Whiti is already the third busiest cycleway in Auckland trailing only Quay St and Tamaki Dr for the number of trips taken.…
Midweek reading: Christchurch, record shops, and decaying infrastructure
I’m doing a smaller roundup of articles midweek due to a lack of time to write proper blog posts. Regular service will – hopefully – resume before much longer.
Let’s start with Christchurch. Rebecca Macfie writes (in the Listener) about what has been learnt in the five years since the Canterbury earthquakes.…
What’s causing Upper Harbour Dr congestion
Last week the Upper Harbour Local Board passed a resolution (below) to try and get Auckland Transport to rip out recently installed cycle lanes near the intersection of Upper Harbour Dr (UHD) and Albany Highway. It’s a section of road that I am very familiar with as I use it regularly when I ride to work.…
Cycling in Tokyo
A great new video from Streetfilms on cycling in Tokyo which achieves an impressive 14% modeshare despite almost no bike infrastructure.…
The Linear City versus the Modern Service Industry
This is a guest post from a reader who’s currently based in Germany. She takes a look at the evolution of Germany’s Ruhr region – a case study in the role of natural resources, technology, and disruptive economic change in shaping urban form.…
Carpets, character, and construction
Back in January, when my grandma’s house was being put up for sale, some relatives came over from Melbourne to help tidy up the place and have a last look at what has, for as long as I can remember, been the meeting place for our family.…
Auckland Conversations: Cities in Action
Auckland recently joined C40 which is a group of over 80 cities worldwide working to address climate change. The executive director of C40 was recently in Auckland and while he was here held an Auckland Conversations talk. During his talk a lot of the focus was on transport and the huge role it has on shaping cities, making them more liveable and of course it’s impact on the climate.…
Sunday reading 27 March 2016
Size, size, size. Many people are concerned about it. But Australian urban policy commentator Alan Davies observes that we shouldn’t fear it (in Crikey):
There’s a popular doomsday scenario where Sydney and Melbourne collapse from the intolerable burden of their populations doubling to 8 million by circa 2050.…
Herald finds Aucklanders like bikes
It was wonderful to wake up on a Saturday morning to such a positive article on cycling in Auckland, and in the herald no less – although unfortunately the amounts talked about are wrong.
Eventually, Aucklanders will be able to cycle from one side of the city to the other on an intricate labyrinth of bike lanes which weave through suburbs, past beaches and over gullies.…
