Weekly Roundup – 31-July-2020
Here’s our weekly roundup Decarbonise Transport
We and some of our friends are holding an event in a few weeks on Monday 10th August.
The challenge is clear: Auckland must dramatically decarbonise its transport system in just 9 years.
So how quickly can we get there?…
Is the Lake Rd upgrade over?
In a time of emergency budgets cutting spending, Auckland Transport looks like it could have $47 million more to spend on projects around the region after the Devonport Local Board rejected ATs plans to upgrade Lake Rd. Radio NZ reports:
Auckland Transport’s $47 million plan to upgrade the only road in and out of Devonport could be dead in the water.…
National’s ‘blast from the past’ approach to rapid transit
While in general I was somewhat critical of the National Party’s recent transport announcements, their commitment to completing Auckland’s rapid transit network was a huge positive and something that I could not have imagined a few years ago.
The second project I am announcing today as part of National’s Delivering Infrastructure Plan is Auckland Rapid Transit.…
Auckland’s Climate Plan
Yesterday wrote about the new National Policy Statement on Urban Development, one of two important events last week that mean the council is going to drastically rework its Unitary Plan. Today I’ll cover the second one, the council’s unanimous adoption of Auckland’s Climate Plan (ACP) – although this requires more than just a change to our planning rules.…
Supercharging Urban Development
Two important events last week mean the council is going to need to drastically rework its Unitary Plan. I’ll cover both in separate posts starting with the National Policy Statement on Urban Development.
Council’s across the country have long talked about wanting to stop or slow our cities from sprawling over the countryside.…
Weekly Roundup – 24-July 2020
Here’s the roundup for the week. Good Auckland Transport
Auckland Transport are consulting on a series of short sections of new T2 lanes on the North Shore in order to speed up buses.
Three North Shore areas are set for faster and more reliable bus journeys as Auckland Transport (AT) seeks public feedback on proposed improvements.…
How Should Housing Affordability Be Defined?
This is a guest post by Tamba Carleton. Tamba is a Research Manager at CBRE and her work focuses on the housing market.
A lot of people would agree that housing in New Zealand is unaffordable. Rents and mortgages cost hundreds of dollars a week, and deposit requirements are so large that people need to save them up over many years.…
Integrated ferries
Auckland will reach another important milestone on Sunday with Auckland Transport finally adding ferries to the integrated fares system.
You’ve been able to pay for your ferry trip with HOP since the system launched in late 2012 but the mode was excluded from integrated fares when they launched in 2016.…
Auckland’s ‘shovel ready’ transport projects announced
Last week in the lead up to the Council’s Emergency budget debate we learnt the government had agreed to nearly $200 million of funding from their ‘shovel ready’ project fund in response to COVID-19. Of this, $98 million was for projects in the council’s budget, and there was another $98 million for other projects not in the budget.…
National’s $60 Billion+ Transport boondoggle
Over the last 10-15 years transport policy has increasingly become about who can spend the most, not who can spend the best. Nowhere was that more evident than the Upper North Island transport policy the National Party announced on Friday. It is a grab bag of projects, many of which might sound great when talking to friends around the barbeque but don’t stack up under any form of rational analysis.…
