NZTA to help fund PT interchanges

Some more good news that the NZTA has agreed to help fund both the Manukau and Otahuhu interchanges. Two keys projects linked to the upgrade of bus and rail services in Auckland south have received $1.6m in funding from the NZ Transport Agency The Transport Agency will fund $780,000 for the design of a bus station at the Manukau transport interchange, and $831,000 for the design of the bus/rail interchange at Otahuhu.…

Cycle Safety Panel announced

In November last year after a coronial review of 13 cycling deaths Coroner Gordon Matenga said “The best recommendation I can make to improve cycling safety in this country and to prevent further cycling deaths, is to recommend that an expert panel, drawn from stakeholders with a unique interest and expertise in cycling and road safety, be established to consider the available evidence and together, recommend the way forward for safer cycling in New Zealand,” He also said it is something that should be done by the NZTA to ensure that central government agencies were involved.…

Bill English on Intensification vs Sprawl

Bill English has provided a fairly blunt but accurate explanation of the issues with urban development in Auckland. Interest.co.nz reports With respect to so-called urban sprawl, I think that’s a nonsense. If you’re against urban sprawl and that means lower to middle income Kiwis can’t buy a house and you can’t build an apartment in the middle of Auckland for less than NZ$600,000, then that’s too high a price to pay.…

Walking on Arterial Roads

Why is the CEO of Auckland Transport saying this? (comment was made to local board members). David Warburton of @AklTransport just told us that arterial roads are not walking environments. Aren’t most town centres arterials? — Vernon Tava (@vernontava) February 26, 2014 He either means that they aren’t currently up to scratch as walking routes or more likely based on the tone of the tweet above (and from others who were there) he was meaning that they shouldn’t be walking environments. …
