Research: Drivers of Firm Location
Cities that wish to foster high-growth entrepreneurship should work to improve quality of life factors, increase the supply of talent and expand access to clients and vendors. –What the Best Entrepreneurs Want in a City The dense urban centres of big cities have never been more important.…
Submit on the roadsfest draft GPS
Submissions on the draft Government Policy Statement (GPS) close at 5pm today. We discussed this document when it was first released back in late February, and to be honest we were not very impressed by it.
The GPS is a really important document in guiding our approach to transport in New Zealand, as it sets key priority areas and broad “funding bands” for how NZTA spends over $3 billion of public money raised every year from fuel taxes, road user charges and vehicle licensing fees.…
Not Stepping on Anybody’s Toes – Mt Albert Consultation Results
Back in December AT re-consulted part of the Mt Albert Town Centre Upgrade even though the previous consultation had 94% support. The consultation was about how to deal with right turns into Mt Albert Road, as AT Engineers were concerned as they usually are about cars.…
Council saves Linear Park from AT’s clutches
We’ve talked a number of times over the last six months or so about our concerns for the future of the city centre and how many of the council’s plans are seemingly being ignored by Auckland Transport. This is most evident in the discussion surrounding one of the flagship ideas from the Council’s publicly consulted City Centre Master Plan (CCMP), the Victoria St Linear Park.…
Website and Fundraiser Update
As you can see, Transportblog has now changed to Greater Auckland. This is a big, scary but exciting change for us and we hope you like the look and function of the new website.
A couple of things to point out.…
Pt Chev to Westmere Consultation – some of AT’s best work
On Monday, Auckland Transport started consultation for some pretty sweet cycleway proposals for Pt Chevalier to Westmere, which is being funded in part by the government’s Urban Cycleway Fund. These cycleways, when built, will add to the others being planned for the inner-west to help create the backbones of a solid network for the area.…
Getting event PT right and setting records doing it
Adele’s recent concerts broke records for ticket sales in NZ but they also contributed to some transport records too. Auckland Transport have announced that Thursday last week, the first of her three concerts has set the record for the most trips on public transport recorded for a single day at just under 400,000 trips (261k on buses, 113k on rail and 25k on ferries).…
March-17 AT Board meeting
Auckland Transport’s board meet again today and I’ve combed the reports to find what I think are the most interesting bits of information.
Closed Session
The closed session is usually where most of the interesting items reside but this time there doesn’t seem to much too report with most items appearing to be fairly technical issues like procurement strategies and bylaws etc.…
Advanced buses not a solution
Friday certainly turned out to be interesting following on from our post from that morning that the NZTA now supported Light Rail along Dominion Rd and to the Airport in the future. The council pulled down the document our post was based on, which was a waste of time given we’d already published our post.…
Sunday reading 26 March 2017
Welcome back to Sunday Reading. Let’s start off with a critical look at driverless cars. Peter Calthorpe and Jerry Walters, “Autonomous Vehicles: Hype and Potential“, ULI.
The reality is that some forms of AV could actually make things worse. The convenience of AVs could result in more miles traveled—up to 35 percent more for personal AVs and an amazing 90 percent more for single-passenger AV taxis, according to Urban Mobility: System Upgrade, a 2014 study by the International Transit Forum (ITF) and the Corporate Partnership Board (CPB).…
