Earlier this year I put in an OIA to KiwiRail asking some questions regarding the Auckland Rail Network, however, due to the abundance of transport news I have not been able to post about it. One of the items that came back to me was preliminary designs for what a Westfield Flying Junction would look like as KiwiRail needed to do one so the NZTA could make sure that any East-West Link design did not preclude its possible future construction.…

Northland Rail

As part of the recent Coalition agreement between Labour and New Zealand First, one of the major policy wins for NZF was the creation of a $1 billion a year fund for regional development projects included Regional Rail. It is highly likely that these Regional Rail projects will include upgrades to the Northland rail such North Auckland Line to Whangarei as well as a new branch line to Marsden Point.…

Draft Auckland Plan – needs a lot of work

Yesterday the Council’s Planning Committee approved a draft version of the Auckland Plan. This will be consulted on next year – at the same time as the Long Term Plan, the Council’s 10 year budget. A little press release after the meeting confirmed the important step: Councillor Chris Darby, Planning Committee chair, says the Auckland Plan is an enormous task that sets out a grand vision for the next 30 years that is dynamic, exciting and almost changing by the day.…

Rethinking the Additional Waitemata Harbour Crossing project

With a new Government, we are able to have a rethink of some of the Transport priorities for Auckland. One of these is the Additional Waitemata Harbour Crossing project. This project has gone very quiet as of late, since the Auckland Transport Alignment Project clearly demonstrated it was nowhere near the high priority that NZTA had previously suggested, deferring it by around 20 years well into the third decade.…
