Westfield Flying Junction
Earlier this year I put in an OIA to KiwiRail asking some questions regarding the Auckland Rail Network, however, due to the abundance of transport news I have not been able to post about it.
One of the items that came back to me was preliminary designs for what a Westfield Flying Junction would look like as KiwiRail needed to do one so the NZTA could make sure that any East-West Link design did not preclude its possible future construction.…
How Dense Is Dense? Part 1 – The Quarter Acre Paradise
This is a post from reader Stephen Davis. It originally appeared on his his blog City Beautiful.
When you talk about cities and transport, one term that comes up almost immediately is density. It’s a simple idea – how many or few people are in a given place.…
Northland Rail
As part of the recent Coalition agreement between Labour and New Zealand First, one of the major policy wins for NZF was the creation of a $1 billion a year fund for regional development projects included Regional Rail. It is highly likely that these Regional Rail projects will include upgrades to the Northland rail such North Auckland Line to Whangarei as well as a new branch line to Marsden Point.…
Draft Auckland Plan – needs a lot of work
Yesterday the Council’s Planning Committee approved a draft version of the Auckland Plan. This will be consulted on next year – at the same time as the Long Term Plan, the Council’s 10 year budget. A little press release after the meeting confirmed the important step:
Councillor Chris Darby, Planning Committee chair, says the Auckland Plan is an enormous task that sets out a grand vision for the next 30 years that is dynamic, exciting and almost changing by the day.…
Dominion Rd bus lanes to finally be improved
Dominion Rd is one of the city’s busiest and most important bus routes accounting for almost 3 million trips annually. At peak times it already sees many more people on buses than in cars – Auckland Transport saying 23% more. The future of Dominion Rd is for light rail.…
The value of rail to New Zealand
For the last few decades we’ve treated rail in New Zealand quite differently to how we treat roads. Rail has been considered a business that needs to pay its way and make a financial profit. Investment in rail has been about supporting that by ‘turning around’ the business.…
What makes a good light-rail route different from a good busway route?
While the “bus versus light-rail” argument over Dominion Road and Airport “mass transit” is now settled, it is inevitable that this argument will come up over and over again as we develop Auckland’s strategic public transport network over the coming years.…
The disappearance of Onzo
About a month ago and with no warning, Auckland’s city centre was suddenly flooded with Onzo’s. Onzo is a dockless bikeshare scheme, the same type that’s been popping up all over the world, although not always with great results. Simon Wilson over at the Spinoff wrote about Onzo here not long after they launched. …
Rethinking the Additional Waitemata Harbour Crossing project
With a new Government, we are able to have a rethink of some of the Transport priorities for Auckland. One of these is the Additional Waitemata Harbour Crossing project.
This project has gone very quiet as of late, since the Auckland Transport Alignment Project clearly demonstrated it was nowhere near the high priority that NZTA had previously suggested, deferring it by around 20 years well into the third decade.…
