Stay Safe
In the last few weeks, there have been several tragic transport accidents overseas – including train accidents in Spain, Switzerland and Canada. These serve as a reminder that there is always a risk with heavy objects travelling at high speeds. There’s risk whether you’re talking about trains, or cars, or skateboarding rhinoceri. …
Consultation on the new bus network in the South closes on Friday
Over the last month and a half, Auckland Transport have been busy consulting in South Auckland on the new bus network that is one of the key ingredients needed to revolutionise public transport in Auckland. However thankfully consultation can’t go on forever and so it closes at 4pm on Friday.…
Congestion Free Network in the Herald
Our good friend Sudhvir had a great op-ed published in the Herald this morning about the Congestion Free Network.
Auckland’s transport plan provides us with a once-in-a-generation choice between two competing visions: to keep pursuing the failed model of motorway-driven sprawl, or to develop a quality, compact city with a balanced transport system.…
All that wasted space
There have been some really good posts recently on Grist about parking requirements and their pernicious effects on the urban environment. We covered how they create really really ugly building typologies a few weeks back while the most recent post examines the level of wasted space that parking minimums create – in other words the amount of parking they force to be provided that probably wouldn’t be provided otherwise.…
The Great North-Western Parking Lot to get busier
Once again when it comes to building an infrastructure project it is the public transport priority that is the first to suffer.
Government road-builders stand accused of undermining Auckland’s public transport effort by closing bus priority lanes for the Transport Agency’s $220 million upgrade of the Northwestern Motorway causeway.…
The CFN: Build It And They Will Come
It is generally accepted that Auckland is a growing little city with a lot of potential. It is also generally accepted that it has a transport problem. Mostly this is experienced by people when driving, as the problem of congestion. There is also a problem for anyone who wishes to get around without driving (and therefore not take part in nor contribute to that congestion), because by most standards, the options for doing so are seriously limited for a city of Auckland’s size and ambition.…
June 2013 Patronage
The June PT patronage results have been published on Auckland Transport’s website – with the headline results being a bit of a mixed bag.
Auckland public transport patronage totalled 69,074,940 passengers for the 12-months to Jun-2013 a decrease of -0.1% on the 12-months to May-2013 and -2.8% compared to the previous 12-months to June-2012.…
Ponsonby Rd Masterplan released
Ponsonby Rd is on of the cities most iconic streets but unfortunately that it doesn’t make it ideal or not able to be improved. Despite the varied and interesting activity along the street, it struggles to balance the desire to be a better place with its role as a major traffic arterial and for a long time the latter has taken priority while all other modes have suffered as a result.…
