You Gave a Lot
A big, heartfelt thankyou from the Transport Blog team to all of our readers who gave so generously when we asked.
Our original target of $1,800 to cover hosting costs was smashed within 24 hours of the GiveALittle link being put up on the website. …
Accept that Auckland will continue to grow
NZ Herald business columnist Brian Gaynor has a good extensive article yesterday about the need to accept that Auckland will continue to grow in size and to ensure that its growth is adequately planned for.
Auckland is at a major crossroads.…
Campbell Live on the Skypath
Campbell Live did an excellent piece last night about the Skypath. If you haven’t seen it yet it is well worth a watch. We have done a number of posts about the project in recent months, you can see them here.…
Public transport emissions in NZ
A few months ago, I looked at the greenhouse gas emissions from cars in New Zealand. As promised, here’s the follow up on public transport emissions.
Trains
Sadly, the New Zealand data on public transport emissions is pretty sparse. An OIA request to Auckland Transport only turned up information on Auckland’s train network – and given that we’re going to be completely replacing our diesel trains with electrics by 2016, this information will be out of date pretty soon.…
First Electric Train has been completed
The first of our new electric trains has rolled off the production line in Spain and is now only days away from being loaded onto a ship to make its way to Auckland. AT have released this video that shows a bit more of what the drivers cab will look like.…
Rudman on the Congestion Free Network
There was a great article yesterday by Brian Rudman in the NZ Herald – and not just because it seems that he’s a fan of the Congestion Free Network. He starts off by arguing that the year of work and the $1 million+ spent on the Auckland transport funding Consensus Building Group has actually achieved relatively little:
What an egregious waste of $1 million of ratepayers’ money that was.…
We may finally be able to see some more red light cameras
Some good news today with the government announcing it has released a position paper on the use of red light cameras. This has been a fairly long time coming after a trial of them a few years ago in Auckland. Even the AA were getting upset with the lack of haste in getting the cameras approved for more widespread use.…
Do they really support the CRL?
The announcement a few weeks ago that the government would support the CRL has had a major political impact but one that perhaps hasn’t been noticed by many in the general public. With high public support along with both central and the current council supporting the project, it has meant that it is now politically difficult for any major candidate to outright oppose the project.…
Fletcher Building getting into the apartment game
It seems that the market for higher density housing is starting to heat up with news today that Fletcher Building has set up a special division to focus on building apartments.
Fletcher Building is making a big push into Auckland’s apartment development market, forming specialist new division Fletcher Developments this year to hunt down opportunities on big sites.…
The Death of Parking Minimums
A week or so ago the Council considered feedback on the Unitary Plan’s approach to parking and made a few recommendations around potential changes:
Rules on parking requirements for residential dwellings, and retail and business locations were considered by councillors and local board chairs at the Auckland Plan Committee workshop on the draft unitary plan today.…
