Weekly Roundup 17-Jan-20
Here’s our weekly collection of smaller pieces. Housing Consents
Stats NZ announced this week that NZ as a whole had reached a 45-year high for new home consents.
“For the first time in 45 years, the annual number of new homes consented rose to over 37,000,” construction statistics manager Melissa McKenzie said.…
Auckland’s PT fare changes for 2020
As expected, Auckland Transport have announced public transport fares are set to rise.
Auckland Transport (AT) has completed its annual review of public transport fares which takes effect from 9 February 2020.
The outcome builds upon the direction given by Auckland Council’s Governing Body in May 2019, which approved: free weekend public transport for five to 15 year olds (proposed by Mayor Phil Goff in his 2019/2020 budget)
the integration of fares for ferry trips into the bus and train network making it cheaper for ferry customers to use multi-mode journeys
a small general fare increase to contribute to additional costs resulting from both enhanced services as a result of increased patronage and inflationary cost pressures.…
Moving Responsibility Upwards

Late last year, two incidents were reported in the media of young passengers being dropped off by Ola drivers onto the motorway network.
The first incident involved two teenage boys ordered out of an Ola cab on the Auckland Harbour Bridge after the driver took the wrong lane:
The passengers, boys aged 16 and 17, were said to have had to run down a motorway on-ramp to get to safety.…
Nov-19 Ridership
Auckland Transports public transport and cycling stats show that while November had one less weekday than it did in 2018, we saw still managed some decent growth in usage.
Public Transport
We should see a more detailed breakdown of the November numbers at the next AT board meeting in February but the high-level numbers are positive.…
Proposed Staging for the NW RTN
Making significant progress on getting rapid transit to the North West should be one of the key objectives of our transport agencies this year.
In early December I wrote about Auckland Transport’s plans for a ‘pop-up’ busway to get things kicked off.…
Flashback Saturday – Housing affordability and sprawl
Every weekend we dig into the archives. This post was originally published in December 2011.
The good old ‘compact city’ versus ‘urban sprawl’ debate has been reignited – with a Productivity Commission report on Housing Affordability pointing the finger at land-use regulation as a major cause for reduced housing affordability over the past decade: particularly in Auckland.…

It’s the first weekly roundup of 2020, our weekly collection of smaller pieces.
Tamaki Regeneration
I came across this excellent video released a few months ago from Tamaki Regeneration about their plans. It’s great they explicitly talk about changing streets to make them safer
One of the most interesting parts is this concept for a significantly upgraded Glen Innes Station.…
It’s time to increase traffic fines
There are not many things that have escaped the clutches of inflation over the last 20 years but one thing that has is traffic fines.
There was a good article by the Herald’s Chris Keall a few days ago about getting ticketed for using a phone while driving.…
Speeding up Wellington Buses
One of the most important things Auckland Transport need to do to improve public transport is to improve the speed and reliability of buses. This is something I wrote about a few times last year including this post where I analysed the average speed of buses in Auckland using timetable data.…
A History of Auckland’s urban form
Over the break while googling for something else I stumbled across this fascinating publication, titled A brief history of Auckland’s urban form 2019 by Leon Hoffman in the Council’s Research and Evaluation team. It had only been published days earlier on 19 December and as the name suggests, looks at the history of Auckland’s urban form.…
