Impressions of Four Cities
*This is a Guest Post by regular reader Warren Sanderson
More specifically these are my impressions from three and a half weeks spent in four cities on the Pacific North West – Vancouver and Victoria in British Columbia and Seattle and San Francisco in the US.…
First EMU makes it to Wiri
On Saturday our first electric trains arrived and last night they were moved to Wiri in the early hours of this morning where they are now tucked away out of sight for engineers to begin the commissioning process. Here is Auckland Transports press release about it.…
Oil prices in the future
This post will be regularly updated as new projections come out. Initially published 26/8/2013, last updated 3/1/2014
Oil prices are notoriously difficult to predict. One paper states that “oil prices have been highly volatile [since 1970], and seem likely to stay that way… the oil market as it is structured today seems inherently prone to further disruption”.…
Why stop at just a second CBD?
Last week mayoral candidate John Palino reaffirmed his position that we should turn Manukau into a second CBD. I have actually looked at some of the issues in the past but will look at a few different points this time.
Auckland mayoral candidate John Palino is promising to build a smart, green new city – possibly at Manukau – as an alternative to “sprawling intensification” proposed by Mayor Len Brown.…
Optimising resident parking schemes
A seemingly constant issue for residents of city fringe suburbs are the problems created by people from other parts of the city, driving and parking in streets, often to avoid the high parking costs in the CBD by taking advantage of free parking and cheaper public transport fares.…
Auckland’s first electric train arrives

Len Brown and the Congestion Free Network
Last night Patrick and I joined some of the team from Generation Zero to have a chat to Len Brown about the Congestion Free Network. During the conversation we discussed all sorts of different aspects of the proposal like the need to focus on an overall vision rather than the individual projects – currently it seems much more like we are building projects that sound good and then fitting a vision around that.…
AT Fare Survey
While the roll-out of HOP seems to be taking forever with hiccups at every stage, it seems that Auckland Transport at least getting on with the next stage of looking at how they might do the next and arguably the most important stage, integrated fares. …
HOP rollout delayed … again
Seriously has anything gone right with this project? It seems that there has been issue after issue at every turn. If you didn’t get it, here is the email that people registered to receive HOP updates got today announcing the roll-out of AT HOP to both Northstar and Ricthies buses has been delayed (they had already been delayed once with Northstar meant to roll out earlier in August.…
Why do road engineers wear short-sleeved shirts?
In NZ the regulations are know as Austroads.
The video itself reminds me very much of this post (go and read the entire thing).
After graduating from college with a civil engineering degree, I found myself working in my home town for a local engineering firm doing mostly municipal engineering (roads, sewer pipe, water pipe, stormwater).…
