Local Elections Candidate Scorecards

The first Generation Zero Local Candidate Scorecards will be released tomorrow, these focus on the Mayoral contest and some carefully selected swing wards. More will follow. Here’s a few made-up examples: I’m sure everyone will have their own criteria and views on the final grades [personally I have to say that none of my students would earn a B+ with the vague waffle from Mr Johnson above, and Mr Todd looks like a clear fail to me too] but that’s not the point.…

The price of a parking in the CBD

Thank goodness we don’t have minimum parking requirements in the CBD. An article in the herald this morning highlights just how expensive carparks are in the CBD. Central Auckland carparks are on the market for as much as $75,000 – a price one expert says could prove a bit of a bargain in the long run.…

Northern Busway Success

While searching for some images for a previous post, I happened to come across this cartoon from February 2008. I doubt there are many today who would still suggest that the busway is a white elephant but the description of it as one back in 2008 doesn’t surprise me considering other major public transport infrastructure – like Britomart – also get similar labels but often turns out to be an outstanding successes.…

Marketing Transit Oriented Developments

This is the kind of development that Auckland desperately needs more of, dotted around some of our key rail stations. It’s interesting how sophisticated the marketing of transit oriented developments is in Vancouver. Detail is provided about how close the building is to other areas by train even before the focus shifts to the proximity of available retail or even the views over the adjacent river: More here.…

Local body voting starts

Voting papers for the local body elections are starting to be delivered today and so it’s perhaps a good reminder to not only make sure you vote but that you carefully consider who you vote for. From what I have seen so far it appears that perhaps the key issue this election will be the Unitary Plan and debates about intensification.…

August 2013 Patronage and Business Report

Auckland Transport has released the patronage figures for August and the great news is that positive signs of patronage growth are continuing. Compared to August 2012 there was one less business day in August which generally accounts for a roughly 4% difference in patronage and on top of that there were less special events and more rail network shutdowns.…

Dealing with events that impact the bus network

An article in the western leader today raises interesting questions about how we deal with events and the disruption they cause to things like bus services. There will be no Santa Parade in Henderson this year. And Massey Henderson Local Board chairwoman Vanessa Neeson says Auckland Transport should shoulder some of the blame.…

Fort St East Shared Space

I last updated progress on the Shared Space upgrade on the eastern section of Fort St in April when there was still a lot of work to do but when I visited yesterday, it is looking almost complete. What amazed me was just how much wider this section of street feels compared to the Queen St end.…
