Long term regional rail in NZ

Occasionally it’s quite fun to look 50 years into the future and ask questions around “what will it be like?” Even the longest term planning documents around tend to just look at a 30 year vision, so going to 50 years is certainly another jump into the future beyond that point – but it’s quite fun and potentially quite useful to make sure what we’re doing in the next 10-20 years doesn’t limit our ability to do potentially very long-term projects.…

More Matangi trains for Wellington

Some pretty exciting news for Wellingtonians today – with an announcement that instead of refurbishing the rather old Ganz Mavang trains, Wellington will instead replace them with an extension of their current order for new Matangi trains: Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) and the NZ Transport Agency announced today they intend to replace rather than refurbish the existing Ganz Mavag trains to complete the region’s peak train requirements.…

Goodbye pork pie? The demise of major industries and wider implications for New Zealand’s transport sector

Several major industries in New Zealand may be in their death throes. First came the news last week that Tiwai Point was looking to renegotiate their electricity price contract with Meridian, apparently because of plunging global aluminium prices. Talk Trains With Veolia

Just a quick public service reminder that the last two “Talk Trains” sessions are tonight at Britomart, 5:00pm to 6:00pm and tomorrow night at Newmarket, 5:00pm to 6:00pm. Senior managers from Veolia Transport, Auckland Transport and KiwiRail, will be at the sessions to answer questions customers may have about a wide range of topics from infrastructure, to timetables, maintenance, seating and the future of rail.…
