Big Day Out 2014 transport
The 2014 Big Day Out is on Friday. It’s good to see the festival back in Auckland – albeit at a different location – after what we thought would be the final one in 2012. I’ve only missed two of them since 2002, but I’ve got a great reason for not going this year – some very close friends are getting married.…
No Pants Subway Ride 2014
A trend that is continuing to spread overseas is for an annual “no pants subway ride”. It’s now in its 13th year in New York and the event has now taken hold in dozens of other cities too. Here is a video from this year’s even in New York.…
Traffic infringements in NZ
Along with the article about red light running yesterday the Herald also ran a story yesterday with the headline of 10,000 fined for no helmet, some get speeding tickets. With the two articles combined its almost as if they were trying to paint all cyclists in a bad light as law breakers. …
Read This: Happy City
Canadian journalist Charles Montgomery’s Happy City is an attempt to understand the various forces at work in our built environments through one over-riding idea. And what a great and important idea it is: Happiness. After all isn’t that really the ultimate aim of all effort around urban change; the pursuit of greater Happiness for all?…
Multi-modal cars?
Often forgotten in the argument about cars vs public transport (and walking/cycling) is that many people are prepared to be quite multi-modal. Many people who use PT also own a car (or at least have access to one) and will use what is what is the most rational and convenient mode of transport for them for their specific trips.…
No one should pay for a mistake with their life
No one should pay for a mistake with their life.
That’s the key message being pushed by the NZTA ad that’s gone viral and now has over 5.6 million views (up from 440k when I posted about it last Wednesday). It’s a key part of the way we design many roads, for example it’s why we have barriers between motorway lanes, light poles that are designed to shear off at the base if someone accidentally hits them.…
The East-West Link and Metroport
Late last year there was a flurry of activity surrounding the East-West Link with fears that Auckland Transport were going to be pushing for a new motorway right though Mangere at the cost of hundreds of houses. Then in December AT and the NZTA backed down saying that they would be working with communities to get the best result for all.…

With this shot you can almost forget that there isn’t a motorway under this bridge. Photo is credited to oh.yes.melbourne…
Another event failing by AT
I had some free tickets to go to the cricket at Eden Park last night. The match was great, particularly as New Zealand won however the one thing that bugged me was the transport options.
Now admittedly there wasn’t a massive crowd at the game and counting crowds notoriously hard to do just by looking but I’m guessing that perhaps about 10,000 people attended so the demand for transport will be somewhat limited however I felt it could have been done a lot better.…
A Short History of the Highrise
A really neat series of videos from the New York Times on the history of high rise apartments. It also includes some neat interactive features to explore some of the segments in more detail. Click through to watch it.…
