Others starting to notice that young people are driving less

We have talked quite a bit about how we are in the middle of a generational shift when it comes to transport with the most notable change being that younger people are choosing to drive less than older generations. It seems the mainstream media are finally starting to catch up to this fact with the herald yesterday reporting: More Kiwi seniors are driving than 10 years ago, while more younger people are opting to be car-free.…

More detailed Census data released

While there ended up being other news yesterday afternoon that stole the headlines, the more important announcement was that of the census results. Like the week before, the results released were still only the numbers from the census night and so didn’t include those out of the country or those that didn’t fill in their census forms – and those numbers will come later – but they did include the results down to the census area unit level which gives a good indication of where the population growth is occurring.…

Late last year we saw designs for a development over the Newmarket rail junction making use of an otherwise empty space (other than the trains) and also providing a second a crucial northern connection to the Newmarket station. It contained a mix of retail, residential and commercial space based around a pedestrian lane and public space.…

I’m pretty annoyed about the comments Maurice Williamson made last week. In his capacity as Minister of Statistics, he has taken data produced by Statistics New Zealand, and misrepresented it. I know I’m being idealistic, but I don’t think statistics should be treated that way, and certainly not by the Minister.…
