Parking in the Viaduct

There’s an interesting item in the most recent agenda of the Auckland City Council’s Transport Committee meeting about parking policy in the viaduct area. Last year there was a proposal to extent the hours in which you have to pay for parking at the side of the street in the CBD from 6pm to 10pm.…

Sylvia Park Plan Change

In the last week or so Proposed Plan Change 235 to the Auckland City District Plan has been notified. This is a private plan change, made by the owner of the Sylvia Park mall, and is designed to allow significant further intensification of the site upon which the Sylvia Park mall is located.…

Darby Street Shared Space

Jeremy made a good point a few days back when he blogged about us transport advocates being a bit too negative at times. I think we have to be critical when things really are going wrong, but at the same time that needs to be balanced by some good news stories.…

Mt Albert – a big opportunity?

Last night I went to an interesting workshop, run by Auckland City Council, to help discuss important matters that should be included in a future District Plan for the Mt Albert area. This is all part of the Future Planning Framework that was supposed to inform the next generation District Plan for the isthmus area of Auckland City – until the whole Super City thing killed off that idea.…

How to save $100 million

An interesting agenda item in the recent Auckland City Council City Development Committee meeting provides an interesting insight into how the supply of parking can impact upon the need to build expensive roading projects. City Council cuts Walking & Cycling funds

Auckland City Council released their “Draft Annual Plan” last week, and looking through it there is some interesting stuff on what capital investment in transport there will and won’t be. For example, if you are curious to know where the money’s coming from to do the various transport upgrades ‘necessary’ for the Rugby World Cup, then this plan is the place to find out.…

Should council own CBD parking buildings?

Auckland City Council owns five parking buildings within the Auckland CBD – Fanshawe Street, Downtown, Victoria Street, Civic and Karangahape Road. All up, these parking buildings provide quite a few thousand spaces in the CBD. I must say I have always found it rather strange that Council does own car parking buildings – as after all does it not contradict with others plans and strategies they have to minimise the number of people driving themselves into the CBD?…

Waterview Updates

There are some interesting updates on the Waterview Connection in this month’s agendas of the Auckland Regional Council Transport & Urban Development Committee and the Auckland City Council Transport Committee. Before I specify the details, remember that this is the kind of information that would not be publicly available under the proposed Super City legislation relating to Auckland Transport.…

Gridlock in Herne Bay

Just caught a rather long-winded bus home, as it got a bit caught up in the gridlock that seems to have descended upon Herne Bay in the past couple of weeks. This is generally related to the roadworks that are currently going on along Curran Street in Ponsonby/Herne Bay.…
