Dominion Rd T2: give your feedback

Auckland City Council has opened up consultation to the general public on their utterly stupid idea of allowing vehicles with one passenger to use the bus lanes along Dominion Road. Give your feedback here. Here’s what I’ve said: 1A: Overall, what do you think of the proposal?…

Analysing the Dominion Road bus T2 lane issue

It is good to see that I’m not the only one out there who picked up on Auckland City Council’s absolutely crazy recent decision to ruin the bus lanes along Dominion Road by allowing T2 vehicles into them. On Friday last week, the NZ Herald ran a story on the issue, which included some quite interesting parts: Buses are at risk of losing their supremacy in Auckland City’s most established commuter bus lanes, along 4.5km of Dominion Rd.…

Why bus lanes are so important

A couple of my posts in recent days have illustrated my frustration, and to an extent outright anger, at possible changes to the Northern Busway and the Dominion Road bus lanes. Changes that would erode the “bus priority” that currently exists on both those routes.…

Bring on the Auckland Transport CCO!

Yes, I know. That’s a pretty painful blog title for me to post – considering I have opposed the Transport CCO for quite some time now, and in a number of different blog posts. But there have been a number of factors over the past few weeks that have led to me changing my opinion of Auckland’s future transport CCO quite significantly, which I will go through shortly.…

Auckland City Council ruins Dominion Road bus lanes

Wow this is a really really bad week for buses, and public transport in general, in Auckland. As I noted yesterday, the crazy idea of HOVs being introduced to the Northern Busway has reared its ugly head again – and the excellent busway may be ruined through the introduction of up to 360 vehicles per hour on the busway – around one every 10 seconds.…

Dominion Road: where to put the bus lanes?

Jon C at Auckland Trains reports that Auckland City Council’s transport committee have approved the suggested changes to the bus upgrade project I talked about in Monday’s post. The main changes are that the bus lanes will no longer meander around the back of the shops at Valley Road and Balmoral, and also that on-street parking along Dominion Road will be removed to enable the bus lanes to operate for longer hours (hopefully) and to allow a high quality cycle lane to be constructed.…

Another shared space, but is it worth it?

There a very interesting agenda item in Auckland City Council’s May 2010 “City Development Committee” meeting, which relates to an idea that it seems the Council is working on in partnership with Sky City, that could result in Federal Street becoming a shared space, but at the ‘price’ of letting Sky City extend their convention centre in the airspace that sits above the road reserve.…

The Grafton Bridge Saga

Back in February I wrote a blog post about how lucrative Grafton Bridge’s bus lanes are proving for Auckland City Council, with well over a million dollars in fines having been issued in the few months that the bridge has been open to buses only from 7am to 7pm, Monday to Friday.…
