Bike Te Atatu – A Futurementary
Bike Te Atatu has put together this fantastic video which they describe as:
A look into a possible future for Te Atatu and eventually Auckland. Made by Bike Te Atatu for the purpose of starting a conversation about our streets and what we want for our community.…
Flagging unsafe streets
There are some people who want to see cyclists decked out from head to toe in high viz along with other assorted measures in the name of safety. If that happens then perhaps pedestrians will be next and in some US cities are already trialling what could be the next, pedestrian flags.…
AT June Board Meeting
On Tuesday the Auckland Transport board meet again and as I usually do I’ve been through the main board report to find anything interesting. Here’s what caught my attention (in the order they appear in the report):
– Under the section on funding assistance approved by the NZTA in May there is $160k for design and $520k for construction of an Onewa Rd Transit Lane.…
Photo of the day: Hydra
It can certainly seem like a multi headed monster at times. Photo is credited to Craig
I’ve never really looked at the traffic volumes on the ramps much but so I had a look and was shocked at how low they actually are, particularly on the off ramps.…
Postcard from Chicago
One of Chicago’s many nicknames is ‘The City With Clout’, and the the reason it is so big is because of the transport connections afforded by it’s strategic position central to the United States. It was first picked as a portage site to drag boats between the upper reaches of the Mississippi River (which provides a navigable route across the continent to the southern states and the Caribbean and on to the worlds oceans), and the Great Lakes (which provide access to the vast interior of the north and access the Atlantic via St Lawrence river through Quebec).…
Manukau Road Diet
Along with the new MIT campus there’s been another recent upgrade to Manukau in the form of a road and parking diet delivered to Davies Ave. I understand the local board pushed this plan along and was also intended to help encourage more people to Hayman Park.…
May 2014 Patronage
The patronage results for May are now out and once again they look good.
Auckland public transport patronage totalled 71,774,868 passengers for the 12 months to May-2014, an increase of +0.8% on the 12 months to Apr-2014 and +4.6% on the 12 months to May-2013.…
Another angle on the Housing Accord
The Housing Accord between the government and Auckland Council, and the Special Housing Areas being created as part of that accord, have been getting quite a bit of press recently. A third tranche of SHAs was approved in May, and another will come through in a few months.…
Manukau Redemption
It is very hard to consider Manukau City Centre up till now as anything other than a planning failure. Or at least an indictment of the auto-centric policies that it manifests. Despite huge investment in driving and parking amenity, siting at the confluence of motorways and arterials, and many efforts to stimulate growth and development there, it has conspicuously failed to thrive for the decades since this plot was plucked from its bucolic obscurity and chosen as the poster child for the decentralised centre idea.…
Photo of the day: Everyday Auckland
Britomart this morning. This now ordinary reality for many is perhaps still too new for some, especially for those who don’t visit the city, or who are stuck in the past, as Auckland is changing really fast. The great news is that because this is change born of growth we can decide what shape we want this young city to take.…
