Auckland Plan gets some patronage targets
A pretty strong criticism of the Auckland Plan’s transport chapter, even in its updated version post submissions, was that it’s not transformational. That critique was touched on in this previous post in particular – highlighting that when you compare the funding split between roads, public transport and walking and cycling, the Auckland Plan actually shifts the focus back towards road expenditure – when compared to the 2010 Regional Land Transport Strategy.…
Guest Post: Looking at PRT – Part 1
This the first of two guest posts is from commenter “Icebird” looking at PRT. This post is solely the opinions of “Icebird” and not of the Auckland Transport Blog.
The (eventual) future of public transport?
Nick R has made several persuasive posts on this blog for consideration of “automated rapid transit” or “light metro” as a solution to some of Auckland’s transit issues.…
The curious case of the Victoria Park Tunnel
The Victoria Park Tunnel (VPT) project makes a lot of sense in theory. It does address a tight point in Auckland’s motorway network – significantly boosting capacity for southbound traffic heading towards Auckland’s city centre and connections with SH16 heading west and heading towards the port.…
Securing the Rail Network
Travelling home on the train on Friday I was looking out the window when I saw something that happens far to often in this country, an idiot was walking along the track next to the one we were on (he was walking on the tracks not just next to them).…
Auckland Plan’s new Development Strategy
As these two recent posts discussed, the Auckland Spatial Plan has been going through a fairly major overhaul during the past few weeks – in response to submissions on the draft plan and also in response to further analysis that has taken place since the draft plan was released for consultation back in September last year.…
I’m calling for a supermarket boycott!
Over the last few years I have become increasingly frustrated by the attitude of NZ’s major supermarkets to transport issues.
Right now Progressives and Foodstuffs are spending big money on free parking, fuel discounts etc for people who drive to their stores. …
Auckland Rail Patronage closes in on Wellington
Rail patronage in Auckland is continuing to close in on Wellington. Metlink were kind enough to update their patronage numbers up to January for me and it revealed some interesting about just how close the two cities now are. Up until the middle of last year there hadn’t been a single month where the Auckland network had carried more passengers than Wellington, the closest we had was in March last year where we were only about 17k trips behind.…
No Integrated Fares with Hop
At the councils transport committee the other day there was a presentation about Integrated Ticketing. Much of the presentation was fairly standard with information that most people who have been following the progress of integrated ticketing will already have known i.e.…
Walking the Tightrope
There has been a noticeable change in the reporting of global oil supply issues recently, although not locally. First I was quite surprised to see this article in the UK’s Daily Telegraph. Surprised because hitherto the Telegraph has largely run skeptical views on Peak Oil: Plateau oil meets 125m Chinese cars The clever, or coy, replacement of ‘peak’ with ‘plateau’ refers to the fact that global oil supply has been bouncing around on a bumpy plateau since 2005 despite the ever rising price signal from the market.…
Council brings forward some funding for the CRL
At today’s Strategy and Finance committee the council agreed to bring forward some funding for the City Rail Link (CRL). Unfortunately this isn’t funding for the whole project but has been brought forward from the next financial year to keep the project going.…
