Will people walk further for higher frequency bus services?
To me the new bus network presents Auckland Transport with many opportunities to improve transport in Auckland. These include: It simplifies the bus network and removes unnecessary duplication and inefficiency.
It allows for greatly improved frequencies across much of the city.…
Big Day Out 2014 transport
The 2014 Big Day Out is on Friday. It’s good to see the festival back in Auckland – albeit at a different location – after what we thought would be the final one in 2012. I’ve only missed two of them since 2002, but I’ve got a great reason for not going this year – some very close friends are getting married.…
Photo of the day – Link Tunnel
I believe this is on Alfred St where the tree canopy have created a tunnel for a link bus. Photo is credited to oh.yes.melbourne…
A new form of station retailing?
Transport for London have announced that next year they will shut down the ticket offices at Tube stations. However while its partly a cost saving measure – as staffing costs are one of the most expensive parts of running a PT system – it also creates opportunities to raise revenue from the freed up space and TfL are already considering how they may do that.…
What can we expect from 2014?
Happy New Year and welcome to 2014. In this post I’m going to look at what some of the big things we can expect to see happen this year. As I mentioned the other day, 2013 was a year that a lot of stuff happened but not a lot actually was completed simply due to the current development cycle we’re in.…
2013: A year in review – Part 1
Over the next few days I’ll be doing a series of posts recapping the year before beginning the new year by looking at what we can expect in the year ahead. For me when it comes to transport, 2013 was always going to be a bit of an “in progress” year.…
Big solutions are not always best
This great video from Santiago shows that when dealing with issues the best solution doesn’t always have to be something massive and expensive but that sometimes quick, cheap and often counter-intuitive solutions can solve the problem. It’s pretty impressive that blocking people a single gate on one platform (along with a person to operate it) can improve the passenger capacity of a station by 15% and enable increased train frequencies.…
November 2013 Patronage Results
The patronage results for November are out and they are an interesting mix. Here are the highlights according to Auckland Transport.
Auckland public transport patronage totalled 69,912,987 passengers for the 12-months to Nov-2013, an increase of +0.2% on the 12-months to Oct-2013.…
Better bus stations
Earlier this year I posted about “better buses”.
The main point of that post was to advocate for a greater focus on improving Auckland’s bus system. To support the case I discussed a couple of cities, namely Brisbane (population circa 2.0 million) and Edinburgh (population circa 600,000), where sustained investment in effective bus improvements have contributed to public transport outcomes that are far superior to what is currently achieved in Auckland.…
Should we build a station at Dominion Rd?
My fellow bloggers and I were having an interesting – and unresolved – debate over the weekend that I thought probably deserved a post. The debate was about whether we should build a train station on the Western line at Dominion Rd.…
