Putting dollar signs around the oil numbers
Like most of the developed world, New Zealand imports most of its oil from overseas. And it doesn’t come cheap. We’ve got to sell a whole lot of milk and lamb and whatnot to settle the bill at the end of the year.…
The CFN: Better Late Than Never
The extraordinary thing about our proposal for concerted action to build a coherent and high standard Rapid Transit Network for Auckland is not that it’s popular, but that it isn’t already there. It is hardly a revolutionary idea that our congestion problem is simply the result of us having little real choice but to drive in Auckland because all we’ve built since the 1960s is more roads.…
If the doors are closing, you’ve missed the train
You really have to wonder why this made the news A pregnant Auckland mother watched in horror as a train’s doors closed, cutting her off from her three young sons and leaving her stranded on the platform as it left a South Auckland station.…
More evidence of “peak car”
We’ve been discussing the ‘peaking‘ of car travel – not only in Auckland and New Zealand – but internationally too, for a long time on this blog. What’s really interesting though is to look at the breakdown of this data into things like drivers license rates, car ownership rates, distance driven per person and so on.…
IPENZ talk on Shared Spaces
Is it just me or do there seem to be a lot of events at the moment, not that I’m complaining. IPENZ is holding another event tomorrow night, this time looking at shared spaces. We know already that shared spaces have been quite a success so hopefully we will learn a bit more tomorrow.…
Old Mangere Bridge replacement to be wider
Regular readers will likely know about the plans by the NZTA to replace the old Mangere Bridge which is now more almost 100 years old and requires a lot of maintenance to keep open. One of the massive advantages of the old bridge is that being a former road it is quite wide and it has become a very popular spot for walking, cycling and fishing with the width allowing everyone to happily do these activities without impacting on others.…

The Magic Roundabout
Following Matt’s Roundabout post from this morning I thought I should share this little description of Roundabout Theory. From a fun little book called:
101 Things I Learned in Engineering School http://www.hachette.co.nz/afa.asp?idWebPage=30685&ID=682998&SID=82349443 The analysis is compelling in this abstract form, however the art comes in when choosing whether a location is appropriate for this solution as the previous post discusses.…
The worst roundabouts in Auckand
Roundabouts can be a useful tool for managing intersections however they can be particularly unfriendly to people not in a car/truck. They often force pedestrians on detours to cross the street while cyclists and even motorcyclists can be quite vulnerable to impatient drivers who floor it out into the intersection at the slightest chance of a gap.…
AMETI Panmure to Pakuranga details
While all of the physical works for AMETI are happening in Panmure at the moment, it’s the future stages that will be the most interesting as that is when a new busway is built that will connect the Panmure Train Station to the Eastern Suburbs.…
