695 Signal or Track Faults in One Year
Answers to parliamentary written questions from Phil Tywford give a worrying view about the state of Auckland rail network. Over the past year there have been 454 signalling and 241 points faults across the network which is almost 2 per day.…
New Waterview Video
The NZTA have released a new video about the Waterview Connection (they actually released it about a month ago but I have only just seen it now). It is definitely a very pretty video but I get the feeling from the ending that it is partly to help push their case for moving the vent stack from the one mandated by the Board of Inquiry.…
Future Rail Network: conceptual service patterns
Following on from yesterday’s post about possible future projects that would make up Auckland’s rail network, in this post I’m going to put them all together to give us an idea about what infrastructure there would/could be. I’m then going to start looking, only conceptually for now, at the kind of service patterns we could run on this future network.…
March not so Mad in 2012
It’s known as March Madness due to all of the extra people that use the PT network however this March appears not to have been much madder than previous years. Auckland Transport has released their patronage stats for the month which show that PT trips increased by only 0.9% compared to the same month last year.…
Our long-term rail future
Quite a few posts recently have highlighted the need for Auckland to have a coherent long-term rail plan. Patrick’s post on Aotea station noted how this station is likely to become the real heart of Auckland’s rail network over time, as well as generating a lot of discussion by posting this long-term rail plan:
A post just a couple of days earlier than that by Matt discussed some comments made by Auckland Transport at an Orakei Local Board meeting about the City Rail Link.…
AT Addressing Rail and Bus Performance
AT has it’s board meeting today and as usual I have gone through the open reports to find out what new information is available. Probably the most interesting thing in this months report is an update to the board on both rail and bus performance issues, many of which have been raised on here before.…
A Northern Exit for Newmarket Station?
An interesting development could be about to happen at Newmarket. Equinox Capital Group is advertising a building that is to be built over the Newmarket triangle, the air rights to which were sold off a number of years ago. Here is what they say about it:
Uniquely positioned above the Newmarket railway lines, 88 Broadway is unlike anything New Zealand has seen before.…
Outer Link – further refinements necessary
I was going to put much of this in a comment on Matt’s post of a few days ago asking how people get to work, but I think it raises issues that will be of general interesting to quite a few readers, so I’m making a post out of it.…
History never repeats …. Except for Transport in Auckland
They say that history never repeats but that doesn’t quite seem true when it comes to transport in Auckland. Our transport history is littered with examples of poor planning, bad decisions, underestimated demand, a lack of vision and corner cutting in order to save a few dollars.…
Fares to rise on April 29
Fare rises are inevitable, but never particularly welcome. Auckland Transport has just announced that most rail fares and some bus and ferry fares and to increase from April 29th. Here are some of the details:
Auckland Transport said today it has completed its annual review of bus, ferry and train fares.…
