Integrated ticketing: the real work begins
After talking about it for over a decade, it’s quite exciting to see that construction work on some of the hardware required for the rail section of the integrated ticketing project has commenced. This was from Auckland Transport yesterday:
Auckland Transport announced today it has commenced rail station construction works which will enable the introduction of a single public transport ticket (Integrated Ticketing) across the Auckland region.…
What does 2011 hold in store for public transport?
Looking forward to this year, there are four main things that I think will be particularly interesting to follow regarding the development of Auckland’s public transport system. They are: The opening of the Manukau Rail Station. I have been somewhat sceptical of the Manukau Rail Link in the past, as I have wondered who will use it without a southern connection.…
Integrated ticketing: what’s going on?
Call me cynical, but if I don’t hear anything about a public transport project for quite some time I start to get suspicious. This generally is for good reason – with examples including the near screw-up of electrification last year and the consistent delays to the Onehunga Line’s opening almost passing under the radar without a ‘peep’ from the powers to be.…
Temporary pedestrian spaces
Another great Streetfilms video shows the amazing impact that pedestrianising a street over the summer months in Queens, New York City, can have on the surrounding neighbourhood: While I’m as sick to death with hearing the phrase “…for the rugby world cup” as anyone out there, I think we do have the opportunity with next year’s tournament to try a few things for the first time.…
Eden Park transport upgrade – all done
By the sounds of it, last night’s first big test of the transport upgrades made to Eden Park worked pretty well. Before the Four National League games yesterday I went and had a look at how things have turned out.
Perhaps the biggest change since I was last there is the completion of the southbound bus lane along Sandringham Road:For much of the past year this bus lane (on the opposite side of the road to where I took the photo) has been under construction – and it has been a pretty tricky job as a slice had to be taken off the properties (with nice new fences and walls built for them) and even a couple of houses required removal.…
Auckland’s RWC transport plan: Hope people walk
Okay, okay, the title is tongue in check (it’s refering to the last sentence of the story) but two days ago marked one year till the RWC and the NZ Herald wrote the following story about the transport plans yesterday. One year till we find out exactly what our PT network can cope with methinks.…
We could have had electric trains for World Cup
A quite interesting question that I have wondered about over the past year or so is whether we could have had electric trains delivered and operational by the time of next year’s Rugby World Cup, had the government not stepped in in March last year to cancel the regional fuel tax and then spend the next six or so months figuring out how to fund electrification.…
Free PT to World Cup games
Hot off the press:
Auckland announces free ride to RWC 2011 matches
Public transport will be free to all Rugby World Cup 2011 matches in Auckland for ticketholders, enabling fans to get to the game quicker.
Auckland RWC 2011 transport director Bruce Barnard says the free ride to games will mean people can board more efficiently without passengers having to buy tickets on the bus or train.…
Rugby World Cup Transport Plan
The Transport Plan for the Rugby World Cup has been released today, and while it doesn’t involve any surprises, it’s good to hear that things appears to be quite well organised – particularly when it comes to getting people to and from games.…
RWC + Auckland’s public transport = epic fail?
An interesting article appeared in the Dominion Post today, and is also on the “Stuff” website, raising the question of whether Auckland’s public transport system will be able to cope with the influx of visitors expected for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.…
