The Transport Plan for the Rugby World Cup has been released today, and while it doesn’t involve any surprises, it’s good to hear that things appears to be quite well organised – particularly when it comes to getting people to and from games.

Here are some some of the key aspects of the plan: One thing that stands out as most excellent to me is the fact that New North Road through Kingsland will be closed. I really hope that the whole street gets turned into a party zone that will encourage people to arrive in the area fairly early and then leave fairly late – spreading the load on the transport system.

The whole plan will still turn to custard if the train system dies, which is always a possibility in Auckland. But assuming that doesn’t happen it seems quite comprehensive.

  1. Yes they seem to hope that the Kingsland shops will be used as a party zone (otherwise there’s no reason why this area would be completely closed) and that people will catch the train from there or walk along Bond street to Gt Nth Rd to catch coaches and buses home. What I’d like to see is the closure of some streets downtown as well – perhaps parts of Queen street, High street etc – i.e. areas which high concentrations of bars and clubs that could spill out onto the streets.

  2. Hmmm, 15,000 people moved by rail in ancient vehicles in an hour… I wish them luck but there is little room for error…

  3. Jeremy, ironically the one RER train that I caught actually felt quite run down. But that was RER C, run by a completely separate organisation to RER A.

Nick, yes you’re right in that even with 15,000 rail passengers and however many thousand bus passenger,s there’s still a lot unaccounted for.

  4. They’re counting on them all coming by though I thought? Hence the partial road closue of Bond street.

  5. A quick glance shows three road names that are wrong – there is no Bellwood St, Bellview Rd nor a Kings Edward St (labelled twice). Bit rushed?
