Snapper Off the Menu?
Brian Rudman writes in today’s Herald that
Auckland Transport board members gather in secret today to finalise a divorce settlement with smart card operator Snapper Services, and hopefully come up with a rescue plan for the stalled $98 million integrated ticketing project.…
First look at the “proper” HOP card?
Courtesy of “Akarana” on the Campaign for Better Transport forum, we may have our first look at what the “proper” HOP card will look like when it’s (eventually) implemented some time later this year (or later this decade, judging by how the project has progressed so far).…
Guest Post: Wellington Public Transport Fare System Review
This is a Guest Post by reader and commenter Louis Mayo:
Hello everyone. This is the first of my promised guest posts and I thought I’d cover this issue outside of Auckland, as the other writers do a fantastic job of this already.…
“Swap your HOP” not far away?
Things have been fairly quiet about the implementation of integrated ticketing in recent times. Auckland Transport’s board paper on the project is quite genius in writing quite a lot of words without actually saying anything – a pinnacle of bureaucratic nonsense: However, a few posts on the Campaign for Better Transport forum suggest that some further news might not be too far away (original source apparently here):
The current HOP card is only available for use on NZ Bus buses.…
Integrated Ticketing in Parliament
The HOP Card fiasco has continued in the last couple of days, with articles in the NZ Herald, on the news, on the radio and now in parliament – with Phil Twyford asking some questions yesterday around whether Auckland Transport were pressured by the government to allow Snapper to launch its product as a rebranded HOP card back in the first half of 2011.…
In come the Lawyers
TVNZ is reporting that the lawyers have been called in by Auckland Transport regarding the whole Snapper/HOP debacle as it is becoming more and more clear that NZ Bus and Snapper will not make the November 30 deadline. There isn’t really anything new for regular readers of the blog with the exception of the lawyer angle and that indicates that things are escalating. …
Hopping to a train station near you
Some machines have been starting to appear on platforms across the rail network. They are HOP ticket machines and will be used to top up HOP cards as well as issue paper tickets and this is what each of the various parts of it are for.…
Auckland’s New Trains: A Missed Opportunity?
Auckland Transport are driving three huge projects at the moment, as Matt describes here, that together amount to nothing short of a total revolution in the delivery of Public Transport in Auckland and therefore in the very shape and experience of the place.…
What Next
By almost any measure, Aucklands public transport system leaves a lot to be desired. Among other things it is often seen as slow, expensive, difficult to use and pretty unreliable but thankfully things are starting to improve and that is already starting to show through in our patronage stats.…
HOP implementation slipping again?
You really do have to read the Auckland Transport board papers quite carefully to pick up on the important things – including a lot of “reading between the lines”. Here’s a classic example, from the business report to Monday’s meeting, in relation to the rollout of integrated ticketing:
Go-Live date prior to 30th November was confirmed for Rail and Ferry services, the Bus services will follow
This is almost the worst sentence I have ever read in the history of anything, because it is completely unclear.…
