ART Light Metro: An affordable solution for new rapid transit in Auckland?
The transport section of the recently released Draft Auckland Plan makes for very encouraging reading, with the main priority being the development of Auckland’s transport infrastructure into a single cohesive network integrated with land use and development. The main ‘principle’ for achieving this (apart from a much needed look at revised and new transport funding mechanisms) is the development of Auckland’s railways into a true rapid transit system.…
Keeping it lean and mean: getting the maximum ‘bang for buck’ from the CBD tunnel (Part 2)
This post is part two of a collection of affordable and effective ways to get the most out of the proposed CBD tunnel, see part 1 here.
5) Modify the Britomart throat crossovers to maintaining the ability to terminate long distance trains.…
Keeping it lean and mean: getting the maximum ‘bang for buck’ from the CBD tunnel (Part 1)
As a long time advocate of public transport in Auckland I feel a certain sort of glee at the huge groundswell of support for a CBD rail tunnel in Auckland. With the likes of our new mayor Len Brown pushing hard it seems we will soon have unstoppable political momentum for the project.…
‘Compelling case’ for $2b Auckland rail tunnel says Brown
Breaking news courtesy of Stuff.co.nz: the CBD rail tunnel has a positive cost-benefit ratio, ranging from 1.1 at the most stringent criteria, through to an amazing 6.6 when including Wider Economic Benefits and a low discount rate.
It seems that much of these results are in line with what was expected, with large direct benefits plus huge secondary benefits related to land use and development. …
How can we meet the next twenty years growth in CBD transport needs?
According to a recent publication from the Auckland City Council, In the next 20 years they expect there to be an additional 54,000 jobs in the Auckland CBD and a further 17,000 residents. Straight away we can tell this is going to result in a lot of pressure on the transport system!…
Is fare-free a fair go?
It’s been a while since I posted anything so I thought I’d step in while Josh is away to help keep things ticking over, my apoligies for the length and wordiness of this one!
The outcome of last Sunday’s motorway closure in Newmarket left me with some sense of vindication as a public transport advocate.…
Where to put Parnell station: weighing up the data
I was under the impression that the location of the proposed Parnell station had been finalised after much to-ing and fro-ing, but recently there has been a push by a local group to change this to a somewhat different location .…
The magic one-hour travel limit
Following somewhat from the discussion on slow transit and travel times, I coincidentally happened to read a paper today that sheds some light onto the ‘magic one hour limit’. This idea that people are willing to travel up to an hour each way to work is more or less considered a fact in transport planning literature, but why is this so, and has it always been that way?…
An introduction…
Hi all,
Joshua has kindly given me a login for the blog so that I can join him and Jeremy in making regular posts on transport topics. It is probably a good idea that I introduce myself as you may be seeing a bit more of my thoughts in the future, so here goes:
My name is Nicolas Reid, some readers may know me as Nick R from the comments pages, the CBT forums and various other blogs.…
Applying the ‘network effect’ on the North Shore
Like Jeremy and the Admin I am a big fan of Paul Mees’s writings on the network effect, particularly his latest book ‘Transport for Suburbia’. I recently studied a transport planning paper with him which basically followed the same flavour of the book: through the use of a network and transfers you can gain the go-anywhere convenience of the car while keeping the move-lots-of-people-in-the-same vehicle efficiency of public transport.…
