Electrification wires now powered up
Following the weekend rail shutdown, Kiwirail have now been able to complete and liven up the wires between Wiri and Newmarket (inlcuding Onehunga). As such they are now kicking into higher gear warnings about live wires across the network.
A safety campaign has been launched this week warning Aucklanders they won’t get a second chance if they get too close to the overhead wires which will power the city’s new electric trains.…
Costs and Benefits of the Governments Auckland Transport Package
A couple of months ago the government finally announced that they would support the City Rail Link, albeit with a later start date than the council are pushing for. A few days later they then went on to announce a massive road building binge including upgrades/additions to the areas around the interchange of SH1 and SH18, the Southern motorway south of Manukau and SH20A to the airport.…
Bin the Parking Mins? Perspectives from the U.S.
This recent post discussed minimum parking requirements in the context of AC’s draft Unitary Plan and highlighted Generation Zero’s campaign to “Bin the Mins”. The campaign encourages Auckland Council to remove minimum parking requirements from the Unitary Plan altogether. Our previous post on this topic generated a lot of attention and 184 (occasionally heated) comments.…
Is it time for us to try Sunday Streets?
My focus this morning has been on San Francisco and watching Team New Zealand win the first two races in the America’s Cup (bloody hell that first race was exciting). It has also got me thinking of an initiative that happens in San Francisco that I would love to see implemented here in Auckland – Sunday Streets.…
Will someone think of the children
From what I can tell, during the week it appears that our councillors tore up the idea of a compact city and instead pushed ahead with opening up greenfield land. Next week when they become available, I will publish all of the relevant voting records of the various amendments that impact on development so people are well aware of who voted for what.…
Lessons from Salt Lake City
A little video from the US showing that even in what is considered the most conservative state in the US, when you present a real vision for Public Transport that people will vote for it and even agree to higher taxes to enable it to happen sooner (not that we are suggesting that with the Congestion Free Network).…
Is Auckland sucking the life out of NZ?
This post is based on an opinion piece I wrote a few weeks back for my employers at RCG – thanks to them for letting me put it up here as well! TV3’s The Vote program last month featured a debate on the topic, “Is Auckland sucking the life out of NZ?”.…
Electrification and EMU update to Transport Committee
At the transport committee meeting on Wednesday Kiwirail provided an update on electrification progress while Auckland Transport had an update on what is happening with the EMUs.
Electrification
The presentation was broken down into three areas looking at the key pieces of work remaining to be done.…
Auckland Vehicle Ownership and VKT
We frequently look at what is happening with transport trends and have looked in the past at measures around vehicle kilometres travelled and vehicle ownership. However we haven’t really looked at what is happening as much at a regional level and so that is what this post is about.…
Auckland Transport Statement of Intent 2013
Every year Auckland Transport sets a new Statement of Intent (SOI) which sets out their strategic approach, priorities and targets for the following three years. Yesterday they released their SOI for 2013-2016. To me the most interesting parts tend to be the targets that get set after taking into account what has happened in the previous year.…
