Expanding Auckland’s bus lane network: the next steps
A few days ago I took a broad look at how Auckland benefits from its bus priority measures, as well as where we might see further bus lanes in the future. In this post I want to focus on what might be our first steps towards expanding the city’s bus priority areas.…
Waterview Connection contract awarded
Yesterday NZTA announced that Fletcher Construction, along with a bunch of other companies, forming what’s called the “Well-Connected” consortium, have won the contract for the Waterview Connection project:
NZTA awards contract for New Zealand’s biggest-ever roading project
New Zealand’s biggest and most complex roading project – Auckland’s Waterview Connection – is a step closer to completion with the NZ Transport Agency’s announcement today that it has chosen the preferred tenderer for the project’s construction.…
Removing the Dominion/New North interchange?
As a kid I was always fascinated by the bizarre interchange between New North Road and Dominion Road, between Kingsland and Eden Terrace. You know the one – it looks like this: From Dominion Road/Ian McKinnon Drive, the interchange looks like this:
You can see from the above photos how “out of place” the interchange is with its surrounding area.…
Peak Car?
A very interesting New Scientist article asks the question of whether we’ve reached “peak car”, whether we’re shifting towards less car use per person in the future – at least in developed world countries.
IS THE west falling out of love with the car?…
Where do we need better bus priority?
In the giant battle that seems to be emerging over bus priority measures – particularly on the North Shore – one big question seems to have been ignored so far. And that, of course, is “where do we need better bus priority?”…
The Outer LINK timetable

While not having a timetable encourages “turn up and go” use of the service, at a bus every 15 minutes I think its frequencies are somewhat pushing the limit of proper ‘turn up and go’.…
Smart Transport conference in Wellington this week
While government transport policies over the past few years have been nothing short of utterly depressing, what has been a lot more promising has been the thought opposition parties have put into creating smarter transport policies. An example of this is a conference put together by the Greens and Labour, related to smarter transport outcomes, that will be on later this week in Wellington.…
New LINK routes start on Sunday
A media release from Auckland Transport reminds everyone that the major central bus changes start taking effect this coming Sunday:
Auckland Transport is urging bus customers to visit the MAXX website and find their new journey plan ahead of major changes to central Auckland bus routes this weekend.…
Why do North Shore politicians hate buses so much?
If there is any part of Auckland that should appreciate what investing in bus priority infrastructure can achieve, it is the North Shore. Over the past few years investment in the Northern Busway, and efforts to improve bus and transit lanes in other parts of the North Shore, have resulted in some pretty impressive results.…
A-Pass launched for World Cup
The NZ Herald reports on the launch of a special public transport ticket for use during the Rugby World Cup, to be known as the “A-Pass”:
The A-Pass has been rushed into production to provide overseas visitors with the type of electronic transport ticket many will be used to in their home cities.…
