Learning from New York

Following on from my post about humanising the CBD, I came across a great video showing the measures that New York City is taking to make that city much more people friendly. It’s well worth a watch: What I found most interesting in the video was the experiences of businesses after the pedestrianisation of parts of Times Square.…

Speed versus Frequency

The new train timetables that started up on September 19th have been running for almost exactly a month now. A major change in those timetables as an increase in frequency for Southern Line and (particularly) Eastern Line commuters, but a corresponding loss of almost all the express trains on the rail network.…

Auckland’s 2050 Rail System?

I like to play around with ideas for dream future rail systems for Auckland, and oddly enough sometimes my rail visions are embraced by those with some opportunity to make them into a reality. But aside from making for interesting discussion points, having a bit of a think about what we might want our public transport system to look like 20, 30 or even 40 years into the future is important for one simple reason.…

Time to humanise the CBD?

One of the most exciting results in the Super City election was the makeup of the Waitemata Local Board. Those elected were Shale Chambers, Pippa Coom, Jesse Chalmers, Tricia Read, Christopher Dempsey, Rob Thomas and Greg Moyle. To summarise, there are five City Vision board members, one independent (Mr Thomas) and one Citizens & Ratepayers (Mr Moyle).…

Len Brown & the Holiday Highway

There’s an article in today’s Herald that effectively reports on Len Brown’s meeting with John Key yesterday. It seems that they discussed the Puhoi-Wellsford “holiday highway” in fairly lengthy detail: Super City mayor-elect Len Brown last night gave his support to the Government’s $1.6 billion “holiday highway” from Puhoi to Wellsford despite promising Aucklanders his first priority would be improving rail services.”Clearly…

August PT Patronage – pretty stunning

ARTA have (finally) got around to uploading the August 2010 Monthly Business Report to their website, and the patronage statistics are pretty damn impressive. Here’s a quick overview of what’s in the report: Some of those numbers are pretty impressive – 7.8% patronage increase overall, 17% increase in rail patronage and a very healthy increase in bus patronage too.…

Building motorways only shifts congestion

A very interesting article in today’s Herald on how the new Manukau Connection motorway – linking State Highway 20 with State Highway 1, is actually create massive congestion on State Highway 1 just south of the connection. A new $220 million Auckland link road designed to take the pressure off State Highway 1 is having the opposite effect, forcing transport bosses to install traffic lights to ease congestion.…
