Grafton Station
As promised I visited the newly opened Grafton Station today. Somewhat hilariously in the 5 minutes that I was there I came across two other public transport enthusiasts who were also there to check the station out. Generally my overall impression was that it’s an impressive little station – and has been thought out very carefully.…
From around the Transit Blogosphere
To broaden the horizons of readers when it comes to transport matters, here are a few posts from around the transit blogosphere of late that I have found interesting read: Metro Rider LA talks about one of my favourite topics, the high cost of free parking.…
Bad news on PT from Hamilton
Some worrying news is emerging from Hamilton about the Ministry of Transport’s latest steps on the commercialisation of public transport and what the effects of the proposed changes to the Public Transport Management Act might be. Here’s an article from the Waikato Times:
Ministry bus plans anger councillors
A project initiated by Transport Minister Steven Joyce to examine increased commercialisation of public transport has irritated members of Waikato’s Regional Transport Committee.…
Supercity Bonus?
While the Supercity is shaping up as a anti-democracy nightmare, one side effect is we may see the back of some of the transport dinosaurs who spread misinformation about Auckland’s transport system, such as Rodney Mayor Penny Webster who made the news earlier this week moaning about opposition to the “Holiday Highway”.…
Progress at New Lynn station
It has been over a month since I last visited New Lynn station – to attend the rail-trench opening. In that time a significant amount of progress seems to have been made on constructing the above ground part of the station.…
Integrated Ticketing v Integrated Fares Policy
After a whole pile of news about integrated ticketing at the end of last year, things have gone quiet in recent times. I have been assured that progress is being made (I wonder why it is that we get suspicious about public transport projects being forgotten about if we don’t hear regularly about their progress?)…
Grafton Station Opens
For someone who doesn’t really seem to like rail all that much, Steven Joyce has certainly opened quite a few train stations, rail trenches and the like. This somewhat bizarre situation continued today with the opening of Grafton Station. While Grafton Station is really just a relocation of Boston Road station by about 200m, it has been built as a pretty high quality station from scratch and will offer good connectivity with the domain, hospital, various schools and the Central Connector busway.…
Mitigating effects of the Waterview Connection
An interesting article in the Central Leader local newspaper outlines some quite ingenious initiatives to help mitigate the adverse effects of the Waterview Connection project on its local community:
Bridging the divide An upcoming competition could help reduce the impact of State Highway 20 on Waterview and surrounding communities.…
A large train
Cartoon in the Hamilton News local newspaper: While of course a lot of support for a train service doesn’t necessarily mean it will end up being hugely popular in reality, but if even one in a hundred of those who signed the petition used the service, the train would be pretty full.…
Simplifying Timetables
As regular readers of this blog would well know, there are quite a few things about Auckland’s public transport system that annoy me. But perhaps what annoys me the most are things that wouldn’t cost much to fix, or those where the benefits of an improvement seem so significant that you can’t quite believe nobody’s done it yet.…
