Untangling the effects of petrol price on transport
Well I’ve spend a couple of hours digging through information on oil prices, petrol prices, state highway traffic levels and public transport patronage, to hopefully come up with some interesting information on the relationship between petrol prices and transport.
Logic tells us that as petrol prices increase we would expect fewer people to drive and more people to catch public transport.…
Onehunga Line feedback
Tomorrow evening ARTA are holding an Open Evening on the Onehunga Line – which will reopen some time early next year. I have prepared some feedback on behalf of the Campaign for Better Transport, and thought that I’d share it before we head off tomorrow and tell ARTA what they need to do in order to make the line a success:
Onehunga Line – Campaign for Better Transport feedback
In 2006 the Campaign for Better Transport (CBT) campaigned hard to reopen the dormant branch railway line between Onehunga and Penrose once again to passenger services.…
Public Transport Projects: 2009-2014
I do a lot of long-term dreaming when it comes to how Auckland’s transport system could be transformed, but while it’s critical to think longer-term, in terms of what we need to start planning for, start designing and start sorting out how funding will be provided, I think it’s also tricky at times to look so far into the future.…
A first step for trams?
The ARC’s Transport and Urban Development Committee this week made a potentially crucial first step towards bringing trams back to Auckland. In February (after an excellent presentation by the Campaign for Better Transport) the committee had requested the preparation of a scoping report into the possibility of having light-rail (trams) as the primary public transport option for getting people from Britomart to the Tank Farm area that is currently in the very first stages of redevelopment.…
Vancouver – what we can learn
I had quite a few interesting suggestions in the comments section of a post I made a couple of days ago asking for a bit of feedback into what readers thought of this blog, and in particular what they wanted me to blog more about.…
The CBD is for people
It was my trip to Europe last year, and in particular the time I had in Venice, which I think had a particularly profound effect on the way I think about how cities should work – and in particular how city centres should work.…
Onehunga Line – will it succeed?
ARTA are holding an “Open Day” on the Onehunga Line, where we can come along and hear about their plans, next Tuesday evening. It should be an interesting evening – as hopefully we learn a bit more about what’s going to happen in terms of some of the details.…
Suggestions welcome!
This blog really seems to have taken off in the last few weeks, especially in terms of people making comments – which is great as I really enjoy replying to them and fine-tuning aspects of what I’ve said in my original post.…
Northwest Busway
The Northern Busway has been a big success since it opened in February last year. Even though the busway has now been fully open for 18 months, its patronage is still increasing quite significantly year on year – with June 2009 patronage more than 20% above June 2008 patronage.…
Infrastructure investment – stuck in the 1960s?
There’s an interesting section in the NZ Herald today, which talks about the need for NZ to significantly invest in more infrastructure over the next decade or two – to bring us up to scratch with Australia. There are a variety of articles that talk about PPPs, the electricity sector and so forth, but what is of most interest to me is talk about transport (of course).…
