Questions about HOP

As most readers would know, the future Auckland integrated ticket was launched on Monday – the HOP card. The NZ Herald seems fairly enthused about the prospects for the card: Auckland has been waiting many years for a public transport system with a transfer ticket.…

General thoughts on transport in Sydney

I’m writing this post on the plane coming back from Sydney to Auckland (will obviously post it later than this though). It gives me a bit of an opportunity to put together some thoughts on Sydney’s transport system. Many people say that Sydney is like Auckland’s big brother: there are many similarities like the harbour, the bridge, the tower, the natural beauty and so forth.…

“Hop” confirmed as name for Auckland smart-card

Well it seems like the rumours were correct – Auckland’s equivalent of London’s Oyster Card and Hong Kong’s Octopus Card is going to be called the “Hop Card”. The NZ Herald ran this story today: London has its Oyster public transport card, Hong Kong an Octopus and Wellingtonians their Snapper, but Aucklanders will be hopping on to dry land with their new ticket to ride.…

Integrated Ticketing Project Update

At yesterday’s Transport Committee meeting perhaps one of the most interesting things we learned was through a presentation by Fergus Gammie from Auckland Transport on what progress is being made on the integrated ticketing project. There have been a number of media releases to do with this project in the past that have told us next to nothing about the details of this project – so it was good to finally get a few answers to the questions I have.…
