AMETI Panmure contract signed

There seems to have been a lot of progress on the Panmure section of the AMETI project in recent times, and that progress has continued with today’s announcement of a preferred contractor to construct the first section of this project: Auckland Transport has awarded a contract for one of Auckland’s biggest transport construction jobs, a $180 million project to start dealing with traffic congestion in the eastern suburbs.…

Panmure busway & interchange progresses

At last Wednesday’s meeting of Auckland Council transport committee there was an update about progress that Auckland Transport is making on the Panmure busway section of the AMETI project. Back in April this year I looked at this project in quite a bit of detail, noting that things have come a long way in the right direction from the days where we were expecting no more than basic bus lanes out of the $1.3 billion being spent on AMETI.…

Service or infrastructure led PT improvements?

There’s something of an ongoing debate in public transport circles over whether improvements should be ‘service led’ or ‘infrastructure led’. What I mean by that is whether we focus on improving service levels to a level where infrastructure investment becomes justified, or whether we look at infrastructure investment as happening first, with service levels being adapted to fit in with that infrastructure.…

The proposed “middle rung”

A presentation by National Road Carriers Inc (who seem to be a trucking lobby group, although not quite so rabid as the Road Transport Forum) to the Auckland Council Transport Committee last week highlighted a roading project which has gathered quite a bit of support in recent times.…

May 2011 Transport Projects Update

The May Auckland Transport business report has (finally) been uploaded onto their website. It’s well worth a read as there’s plenty of interesting information in there about progress on the various pieces of work Auckland Transport is currently involved in – as well as an interesting insight into how the organisation is functioning.…

Auckland Transport’s take on the GPS

My opinions of the draft Government Policy Statement for transport funding were articulated in this recent post. Papers from Auckland Transport’s May board meeting outline the issues of concern to them in the document. Helpfully, Auckland Transport provide some useful tables that more clearly highlight areas of funding that are proposed to increase and decrease over the next 10 years.…

Road lobby wants to waste megabucks

I must say sometimes I really struggle to understand the logic behind many of central government’s transport decisions in recent times. Cutting back funding for public transport infrastructure improvements when PT patronage is booming, pushing for massively more state highway spending when traffic flows are declining, sometimes it’s just really difficult to make sense out of what thinking’s going on behind the scenes.…

NZ Herald on funding squeeze

An article in today’s NZ Herald picks up on the funding squeeze for transport that I posted about a couple of days ago. For a start, it points out the irony of potentially significant funding shortfalls at the very time we’re seeing public transport patronage skyrocket: Auckland Transport faces a tight funding squeeze as it struggles to cope with unprecedented numbers of commuters switching to buses, trains and ferries.…

AMETI Panmure Open Day

I wasn’t able to attend yesterday’s open day on the Panmure section of AMETI, but Auckland Transport kindly sent through to me the details of what was presented at the open day. I have uploaded parts one and two of the documents for easy viewing.…
