Light Rail Trade-offs
The release of the latest Auckland Transport Alignment Project two weeks ago included this comment about light rail.
“This ATAP will see our rapid transit network grow considerably. I’m looking forward to updating Aucklanders on the next steps for light rail next month,” Michael Wood said.…
After six years, will 2021 finally see real progress for light rail?
On January 23, 2015, Auckland Transport sprung a huge surprise on everyone, including then Mayor Len Brown, by announcing a plan to introduce light-rail on several key isthmus corridors to fill the rapid transit void on the Isthmus. The announcement was timed so that it could be included in the draft 2015 Regional Land Transport Plan.…
Light Rail process rebuke
In his guest post yesterday Minister of Transport Michael Wood highlighted that light rail was a priority for him and that he expects to make an announcement on the next steps for the project next year.
There are going to be a lot of decisions to make to get us from where things are to having spades in the ground and one of the key ones is how the project moves forward and will be delivered.…
Light rail and light metro, why not both?
Last week the new government was officially sworn in and among other things, it means we have a new transport minister, Michael Wood. One of the biggest challenges he’ll face is making some progress on Light Rail. As I covered last week, the good news is he has previously shown himself to have a good understanding of transport issues and the light rail project.…
The Light Rail Document Dump
Yesterday the Ministry of Transport dumped a heap of documents from the light rail process between Waka Kotahi NZTA and NZ Infra, the joint venture between the NZ Superfund and Canadian counterparts CDPQ, that ended in June with no decision being made.…

The government swiftly took the project off Auckland Transport and the biggest issue at the time seemed to be the complete radio silence from Auckland Transport and then Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency about the project which had allowed misinformation about it to sprout like mushrooms after rain.…

With everything that’s going on right now, there is perhaps no better time for the government to reconsider its approach to light rail.
As regular readers will know, over the last year or so we’ve become increasingly concerned about what is and isn’t happening with light rail.…
Light Rail Key Decisions
Last week the Herald ran their annual Project Auckland report which focuses primarily on the being built and talked about. I was asked to write something on what is important for the government consider in their upcoming decision on Light Rail.…
Light Rail Update for January
As regular readers will know, we’ve been concerned about the process currently underway to decide on who builds light rail as the whole project has been delayed by years thanks to the mess caused by the NZ Super Fund and their Canadian partners.…
Sydney’s new light rail
Sydney’s much hyped new light rail line between Circular Quay and Randwick opened on Saturday but the event went far from smoothly with one of the vehicles breaking down and causing delays. Teething problems are nothing new with big transport projects but what has concerned many much more is that the services are incredibly slow, taking over 50 minutes to cover the approximately 8.5km route.…
