Auckland’s 80’s Development Boom
The 1980s saw Auckland’s city centre change considerably. It was then that much of Auckland’s architectural history was demolished, with many of the towers that dominate the skyline today sprouting up in their place. Of course some sites, like that of the old Royal Hotel, are still empty to this day.…
How Dense Is Dense? Part 1 – The Quarter Acre Paradise
This is a post from reader Stephen Davis. It originally appeared on his his blog City Beautiful.
When you talk about cities and transport, one term that comes up almost immediately is density. It’s a simple idea – how many or few people are in a given place.…
Draft Auckland Plan – needs a lot of work
Yesterday the Council’s Planning Committee approved a draft version of the Auckland Plan. This will be consulted on next year – at the same time as the Long Term Plan, the Council’s 10 year budget. A little press release after the meeting confirmed the important step:
Councillor Chris Darby, Planning Committee chair, says the Auckland Plan is an enormous task that sets out a grand vision for the next 30 years that is dynamic, exciting and almost changing by the day.…
Next section of Federal St to get shared space treatment
Federal St, between Mayoral Dr and Wellesley St, is to be the next street in the city to get the shared space treatment with Auckland Transport beginning consultation on it today. Here’s what AT say about this upgrade.
We are proposing a full streetscape upgrade of the section of Federal Street between Mayoral Drive and Wellesley Street.…
America’s Cup base location shortlist
We’re excited about Auckland hosting the next America’s Cup. In part this is due to the opportunity it provides to further enhance our city. That’s because there’s nothing quite like the unmovable deadline of a prestigious event to give politicians and officials the impetus needed to push along improvements to the city. …

With a new government we expected to see significant change to transport in New Zealand. Yesterday we got the first glimpse of that with the signing and release of Labour’s agreements with New Zealand First and the Greens. Of the two agreements, the policies outlined in the Greens confidence and supply agreement are most relevant to the issues we talk about the most so I’ll start with that
Greens
Under the section of “Sustainable Economy”, one of the listed goals is focused on transport.…
National’s Top 10 Urban Achievements
I think it’s fair to say that we’re pretty excited about the potential of the new government to deliver a significant change to urban issues in New Zealand, and particularly in Auckland. It still feels really weird to think that the government has actually changed.…
Video – the high cost of free parking
We have talked about the stupidity of parking requirements for as long as this blog has existed. Here’s a recent good video from Vox that runs through the key points through an interview with parking guru Donald Shoup. We should soon be hearing about where the Environment Court landed in relation to an appeal by retailers against Council to reject applying minimums for retail activities.…
Council’s City Centre video
On Friday the council published this video highlighting the importance of Auckland’s city centre and busting a few common myths, such as that the city sucks rates out of the rest of the region. Overall the video is pretty good but I do wonder if it couldn’t have been a bit stronger to really hammer home its points.…
