Where is this (and can it be fixed)?
In this spirit of last week’s post on the car-centric design of Botany Town Centre, here’s another bit of Auckland that seems to have been dedicated entirely to the parking of cars. Strangely enough, the area is actually superbly served by public transport (which should be a bit of a clue about where it is).I…
Frequency Mapping
Human Transit has another “must read” blog post about the importance of getting the way in which you “map” your public transport system right. In particular, Jarrett notes the importance of distinguishing on your route maps the difference between a service that operates every 5-10 minutes all day long (such as the Dominion Road buses) and a service that might operate only once a day (such as the weird 018 route between Herne Bay and Otahuhu).…
AMETI: still ignoring the elephant in the room
An NZ Herald article today shines light on some growing worries that the “Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative”, known more commonly as “AMETI” may be a first step to reviving the dreaded “Eastern Motorway” – which Aucklanders resoundingly rejected in the 2004 local government elections.…
North America Trip
As I noted in yesterday’s blog post, which went on to rather dominate the comments thread, I will be out of the country in North America between September 3rd and September 26th. Leila and I are taking a three week holiday that has been about two years in planning.…
Statistics show we are driving less
As I have noted before, there is a giant assumption behind just about every proposed transport project – particularly behind every proposed roading project. That giant assumption is that people will continue to drive more and that traffic will continue to increase and congestion worsen.…
Newmarket Viaduct Closure – should PT be free for the weekend?
NZTA have announced that over the Father’s Day weekend at the start of September the Newmarket Viaduct will need to close for around 36 hours. This closure sounds essential in undertaking the last bits of “tying in” the existing roadway with the first half of the new viaduct, which has now been constructed.…
Public Transport & open data
Here’s a great little video from the excellent Streetfilms on the benefits of “open data” for tracking public transport. Essentially, “open data” would include data that outlines timetables, bus stop/train station locations and (eventually) real-time information on where every bus train, train and ferry is in the whole city – with the key point being that the transit agency would make that data available for anyone who wants it.…
Is North Shore Rail a priority?
While it’s exceptionally pleasing to see Super City mayoral candidates almost falling over themselves at the moment to promise Auckland significant development of its rail network, an interesting issue was highlighted in a NZ Herald article today about the idea of rail to the North Shore.…
Victoria Park Tunnel – videos
While looking for some detailed plans of how NZTA will manage the closure of the Wellington Street onramp for three months starting pretty soon, I came across a couple of great videos providing updates on how building the Victoria Park Tunnel is progressing: This is a pretty exciting project and, unlike some of the other roads of national significance, the numbers seem to stack up pretty well in terms of its cost-effectiveness.…
Where is this?
You’d never think Auckland might have a railway station that looks this good right? Well wrong. Amazingly, this is the New Lynn station – photo taken by Geoff. This is superb world-class rail infrastructure we’re getting. More photos at the link above.…
