2011 & 2012 Station Boarding Stats
Back in June 2011 Auckland Transport released station boarding data for each railway station between 2003 and 2010. The results obviously show significant growth throughout the entire network, but particularly at some stations (like Panmure and Pukekohe) and less so in other areas (like Waitakere and Te Mahia).…
November 2012 Patronage Stats
As Mr Anderson said on Saturday, patronage results for November are out and they don’t look pretty, which in the case of rail is being largely blamed on the introduction of HOP. Here are the ‘highlights’: Annual Auckland public transport patronage for the 12-month period to end-November 2012 was 69,873,178 boardings an increase of +1.1% (+767,096 boardings) compared to the 12-month period to end-November 2011.…
Reducing rail fare evasion
The November patronage statistics highlight that the dip in rail use continues. Like September and October, when the Rugby World Cup last year made comparisons a bit silly, in November there’s a reasonable explanation for the dip: the transition to use of the AT Hop card means that trips are no longer counted at the time of purchase (for 10 ride tickets) but instead at the time the trip is actually made.…
Southern Line Station Performance
Hidden in the business case for electrification to Pukekohe is some patronage data for the group of Southern, Eastern and Onehunga line stations. The data is for both the number of people boarding and alighting services at stations and my understanding is based on manual passenger counts done in May each year.…
Investing in Public Transport is a Chicken or Egg debate
In New Zealand, the provision of public transport seems to have really gotten into a chicken or egg debate. This is especially so with the current government who are very reluctant to spend any money on improving public transport using the argument that because most people drive, then we should invest in roads.…
October 2012 Patronage Stats
Patronage results for October are out and just like September there was a big drop as we shake off the post RWC boost which made annual figures look good for a while. Here are the Highlights of the report
Annual Auckland public transport patronage for the 12-month period to end-October 2012 was 70,179,157 boardings an increase of +2.2% (+1,516,488 boardings) compared to the 12-month period to end-October 2011.…
The Steady Transformation of Travel to the CBD
Despite the critics, Auckland’s city centre is probably in better shape than it has been for decades. Foot traffic is high, new streetscape improvements continue, Queen Street is clearly still extremely “hot property” and the place just feels vibrant. Looking into this steady, almost sneaky, transformation of downtown over the last ten years or so, I went searching for what seemed to possibly be the cause.…
September 2012 Patronage Stats
Well we knew that this was coming. Auckland Transport have released the patronage stats for September and they look pretty grim as the glow from the RWC wears off. Overall patronage was down 13.4% on 2011 however AT have also pointed out that this year has been affected by the fact there were two less working days which they estimate has had a -7% to -8% impact.…
Why is our Rail Patronage Stalling
Like I’m sure many of you are, I have been getting increasingly concerned about what is happening with rail patronage this year and it seemed like as soon as the RWC finished, the growth just hit a wall. The 12 month rolling patronage total is likely to drop quite a bit over the next few months as we finally work the RWC boost our of our system.…
August Patronage Stats
The PT stats for August are out ahead of next weeks board meeting (thanks AT, please keep this up). The numbers over the coming months in particular are going to very interesting to see just what impact was made by the RWC last year but more on that shortly.…
