Removing the Dominion/New North interchange?

As a kid I was always fascinated by the bizarre interchange between New North Road and Dominion Road, between Kingsland and Eden Terrace. You know the one – it looks like this: From Dominion Road/Ian McKinnon Drive, the interchange looks like this:  You can see from the above photos how “out of place” the interchange is with its surrounding area.…

Peak Car?

A very interesting New Scientist article asks the question of whether we’ve reached “peak car”, whether we’re shifting towards less car use per person in the future – at least in developed world countries. IS THE west falling out of love with the car?…

The Outer LINK timetable

I must say I was a bit disappointed when I found out that Auckland Transport wouldn’t be publishing a timetable for the Outer Link bus service, which begins this Sunday. While not having a timetable encourages “turn up and go” use of the service, at a bus every 15 minutes I think its frequencies are somewhat pushing the limit of proper ‘turn up and go’.…

Weird Herald article trying to rewrite history

There’s a fairly long and quite rambling opinion piece in today’s NZ Herald, about transport in Auckland and particularly about the relatively poor quality of the city’s public transport system. There’s nothing particularly surprising about this, and the article’s look back at Auckland’s transport history – in particular the tale of Mayor Dove-Myer Robinson’s rapid rail proposal – is a useful reminder about how efforts to improve Auckland’s rail system have generally found huge public support.…

The problem with obsessing over congestion

I have recently got hold of (for the second time) Paul Mees’s first book: A Very Public Solution. While it has many similarities with his most recent book, Transport for Suburbia, there are early parts in A Very Public Solution which give a good overview of the “transport situation”, setting the scene for why we need better public transport and – the main focus of the book – what better public transport might actually entail.…
