Len Brown on CBD rail tunnel
There’s an interesting interview of Auckland Council mayor Len Brown in today’s NZ Herald. In particular, he talks about the CBD Rail Tunnel quite a bit:
What progress do you hope to make this year on the rail loop?
By the end of the year we will be through defining the route, seriously into the consenting process, defined the funding, firmly on track towards the initial construction and I’m quietly confident the Government will be behind the project.…
Cleaning up Otahuhu bus station
Some good news from Auckland Transport today – that work is going to be done to ‘spruce up’ the rather dilapidated Otahuhu bus station:
Otahuhu bus station is getting a new year spruce up, led by Auckland Transport.
Auckland Transport, NZ Bus (who operate the station), Auckland Council and the local business association have been working together on a programme to keep the station clear of graffiti and other vandalism and rubbish.…
Why not just buy them a dishwasher?
Most transport projects, particularly when it comes to widening motorways or building new ones, derive the vast majority of their estimated ‘benefits’ from the travel time that they will supposedly generate. These “time savings benefits” form the core of most transport cost-benefit analyses that are undertaken – even for public transport projects, where it would seem the biggest apparent benefits of investing money in public transport is to free up traffic movement on the roads.…
Further patronage analysis
I must admit I got a little sidetracked in writing yesterday’s post about PT success, by the analysis I did of Auckland’s bus patronage since 2002. Analysing the patronage of the bus network, and of all PT modes as a whole, is actually something deserving of its own dedicated blog post as there are some quite interesting things you find if you look closely enough.…
Northern Busway extension a reality?
Good news (for once) from NZTA today – that plans are advancing for the extension of Auckland’s Northern Busway:
The NZ Transport Agency has announced plans for the next stage of investigations into options for the long-term extension of Auckland’s Northern Busway by another 16 kilometres, to serve the communities of Silverdale and Orewa.…
Measuring PT success
A lot of effort, and money, has gone into improving Auckland’s public transport system over the last decade – mostly in the form of upgrading the rail system, building the Northern Busway and providing the bus companies with increasing levels of public subsidy.…
Flat fares?
When I was in North America earlier this year one thing I noticed about a number of the metro systems was that they used flat-fares. In New York City, for example, one ride cost $2.25 no matter how far you went and no matter how many lines you changed.…
Just how fast will our Electric Trains be?
The first visible signs of electrification are starting to appear across the rail network, which is great to see, but there are still a few big unanswered questions. The biggest of these is what sort of trains we will actually get and probably more importantly how these trains will perform.…
Onewa Road’s extended T3 lane
Last year there was some talk of Onewa Road’s T3 lane being downgraded to becoming a T2 lane – an utterly mad proposal considering the enormous number of people that use the T3 lane at the moment (around 75% of people during the 7.30-8.30am peak hour).…
Your help needed: making NZTA accountable
The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) spends close to $3 billion of public money on transport activities every year. All your petrol tax dollars, all the road user charges that trucks pay and a decent chunk of your vehicle registration fees go into a funding pool (known as the National Land Transport Fund or NLTF) that NZTA is responsible for dispensing.…
