Integrated ticketing: the real work begins
After talking about it for over a decade, it’s quite exciting to see that construction work on some of the hardware required for the rail section of the integrated ticketing project has commenced. This was from Auckland Transport yesterday:
Auckland Transport announced today it has commenced rail station construction works which will enable the introduction of a single public transport ticket (Integrated Ticketing) across the Auckland region.…
Improving the bus system – without breaking the bank
In his Friday column last week, Brian Rudman raises the excellent point – one that I’ve really tried to push – that if we want to improve Auckland’s public transport network quickly and relatively cheaply, we need to focus most of our efforts on improving the bus system.…
More secrecy from NZTA
My second to most recent OIA request to NZTA finally arrived today. There are a number of interesting documents that I will read through over the next few days and potentially pick out parts that I think are worthy of discussion.…
Council’s expectations of Auckland Transport
In the latest meeting agenda of the governing body of Auckland Council, there’s an interesting piece that documents what Auckland Council expects of Auckland Transport over the next couple of years (pages 85-90 of this document). Much of what’s included in this document has been foreshadowed in previous draft versions of Auckland Transport’s statement of intent, but a few things have been personally added by the mayor and it’s very interesting to get an overall feel for what the Council wants Auckland Transport’s priorities to be.…
Improving the CBD section of the Northern Busway
I was having a discussion with someone last week over the question of how necessary a North Shore Railway Line is. I certainly agreed with them that it was the lowest priority of the “big three” rail projects that Len Brown has promoted (behind the CBD Rail Tunnel and rail to the airport).…
Real time bus tracker
Here’s a great video from Streetfilms showing how Chicago enables people to track exactly where their bus is, using GPS technology. We already have a very basic version of this in Auckland – in that you can check on the computer how long until the bus gets to your stop (along some routes), and at some stops you can see how many minutes away your bus really is on a sign.…
Dare I hope for better buses?
There was an article in today’s Herald by Brian Rudman that not only refers to this blog, but also refers to one of my biggest annoyances when it comes to catching my regular bus: the extraordinary unreliability of the service when it comes to the length of time it takes to get from Customs Street up to Victoria Street.…
K Street Transitway
One of the interesting things to come out of the December meeting of the Auckland Council Transport Committee was a new look at a “way forward” on the Dominion Road issue. The minutes of the council meeting recorded:
Of particular note is the specific mention that “median bus lanes” should be considered.…
London’s Spatial Plan
A lot of discussion in planning circles at the moment is about the upcoming ‘Auckland Spatial Plan’. There’s even an article in today’s NZ Herald about the Spatial Plan and its importance:
Dr Blakeley said work was “full speed ahead” on preparing the draft Auckland Plan, and was on target for June next year, despite some views that such a big task would take three to five years.…
Bus changes: simplification or just confusion?
Rule number one for structuring a bus route network is surely that all routes with the same number take the same route- right? If you jump on bus J, then you expect it to take a particular route and for that route to always be the same – right?…
