Who should pay for grade separation?
As our rail system has improved, people are increasingly starting to see value in being nearby it. This is leading to more and more people who live along the rail line to want new stations in their communities. We have seen calls for a new station in the valley below Selwyn College, a new station on the site of the old Tamaki station and a new station at Parnell.…
Veolia’s profit doubles even though patronage declines
This bit of news caught my eye a week or so back, although at the time we were a bit overrun with Unitary Plan matters. It seems that Veolia is doing quite well out of their Auckland rail contract:
Veolia Transport Auckland, which runs the city’s urban passenger trains, almost doubled its annual profit last year after it changed the way it does business.…
April patronage and HOP review
Auckland Transport have their board meeting this week and so have finally release the patronage results for April and there has been some significant changes to how they are doing it. Instead of just some monthly PT figures, AT staff are proposing adding in wider economic indicators which may have impacts on the transport network along with results on other parts of their business, like arterial road performance, I think this is a good move.…
“Buses as pedestrian fountains” – Jarrett Walker in Auckland
Some you may recall that a month or so ago my colleague Jarrett Walker came to Auckland to talk about public transport. In this presentation, Jarrett discussed some of his work on Auckland’s new network. The general thrust of his talk was that improvements to Auckland’s bus network will play a crucial role in Auckland’s future public transport network. …
Auckland’s Historic PT Patronage
Some comments the other day raised the question about what led to patronage dropping so much in the late 1950’s. Was it the removal of the tram network or was it the opening of the Harbour bridge, the motorways and the introduction of cheaper cars.…
March 2013 Patronage
Patronage stats for March are out and as usual, are interesting reading. Once again only ferry patronage was up on March last year however AT have finally taken on board a suggestion I have made in the past and reported what is happening with weekday patronage (more on this later in the post).…
Feb 2013 Patronage
I imagine that there are a few staff not looking forward to the AT board meeting today when it comes time to discuss patronage as the results for Feb certainly aren’t pretty. The highlights, if you can call them that, are:
Auckland public transport patronage totalled 69,516,680 passengers for the 12-months to Feb-2013 a decrease of -1,147,482 boardings or -1.6%.…
Time to Invest in Vital New ‘Pipe’
Transport infrastructure is just one of small group of vital core systems that the entire edifice of the city depends upon. This group; the water, wastewater, electricity, telecommunications, and transport structures of a city are critical to its wellbeing and success.…
Increasing PT Patronage
At Auckland Transport’s February board meeting there was a paper about the ongoing flattening of public transport patronage growth and ways in which Auckland Transport can look to grow patronage. Most of the paper consists of fairly boring excuses for the drop in patronage in recent months but towards the end of it there’s actually a bit of actual information on what Auckland Transport is trying to do about this drop.…
The true test of Auckland Transport
It’s now almost two and a half years since Auckland Transport came into existence: joining together the transport functions of ARTA and all the old Councils into one organisation. There was a lot of angst around Auckland Transport’s creation – why should something as political and as debated as transport be pushed away into a separate organisation from the Council?…
