Auckland Transport Plan – epic fail
The 10 year Auckland Transport Plan has been released by ARTA. This is the flagship document to drive transport planning and construction over the next 10 years in the Auckland Region.
I will comment a lot more on this plan over the next few days, and there are some pretty good things in it.…
More on the RLTP
Yesterday I looked at the Regional Land Transport Programme in quite a bit of detail, so I’m not going to rehash everything I said in that post obviously. The main point I came to was that ARTA had done their best to ignore the stupid changes to the government policy statement for transport – and good on them for doing so.…
Regional Land Transport Programme Released
The ARTA 2009/10 to 2011/12 Regional Land Transport Programme has been released. This particular document is the kind of “end product” when it comes to transport planning and funding in the Auckland Region, and talks about all the transport projects that will take place in the next three years.…
Climate Change (Transport Funding) Bill
It was an interesting day in parliament yesterday, with the Green Party dominating the member’s day to such an extent that the only bills that were actually debated were from the Green Party. One of those bills was the Climate Change (Transport Funding) Bill, put forward by Jeanette Fitzsimons.…
Why building motorways can be daft
I’m reading an excellent book at the moment – Resilient Cities by Peter Newman, Timothy Beatley and Heather Boyer. I commented on this book a few posts ago, with particular reference to how pathetic our preparedness for peak oil is and how stupid Treasury’s oil price predictions are.…
How Should We Prioritise Transport Projects?
Ever since reading through the cost-benefit analysis of the Waterview Connection (the old full tunnel version, we don’t even know what the cost-benefit analysis of the newer version is) I have become somewhat skeptical of the ways in which we analyse the costs and benefits of various transportation projects.…
Stations Funded, Integrated Ticketing Questionable
There’s an interesting article in today’s Herald about the progress of sorting out the mess Steven Joyce left Auckland’s public transport in when he cancelled the Regional Fuel Tax a couple of months back. There’s some good news, some frustrating news and some potentially good news.…
Government Takes Us Back to the 60s
I am sure the 1960s were great – good music, free love and all. However, it is disappointing to see the direction in which the Ministry of Transport’s government policy statement is taking transport in New Zealand. Someone should tell Steven Joyce that the 60s were 40 odd years ago now and the world has moved on!…
More dodgy workings from Steven Joyce
Steven Joyce really is beginning to annoy me as Transport Minister. Not only has he trodden all over the people of Mt Albert and Waterview, in deciding to can the Waterview tunnel, but he lives in a bizarre dreamland where he thinks that funding for future transport projects should be dependent upon the current amount of people using a particular type of transport method, rather than the future trends of where the split in transport modes is going.…
What $2.2 billion can buy
Let’s just say Auckland had $2.2 billion to spend on transportation. This money is from a crown grant rather than from petrol taxes, so there’s no real bias from the school of thought that petrol tax money should be spent on roads.…
