Public Transport Statistics

A very kind reader has sent me a bunch of statistics on public transport in Auckland, as well as other cities throughout New Zealand and Australia. They make for interesting, if rather sobering, reading. For a start, let’s have a look at per-capita annual public transport boardings between 1999 and 2009 across a bunch of Australian and New Zealand cities: The results here look pretty disappointing for Auckland – which only increases from 39 trips per year per person to 41 trips per year per person.…

RLTS Released Tomorrow

Tomorrow the 2010-2040 Regional Land Transport Strategy will be released for consultation. This is a key strategy that will guide Auckland’s transport development over the next thirty years, so I am very glad to see that it is a well balanced document, providing around $21.5 billion for public transport improvements and operating costs over the next thirty years, compared to $24 billion for road improvements and maintenance.…

Density and Public Transport

It’s often said that for public transport to work, you need high residential densities. I don’t remember the exact figures, but I know that there are a few books I have read over the years that have gone to the level of calculating the densities required for different levels of public transport service – ie.…

The Auckland Transport Agency

It’s quite bizarre finding myself agreeing with Steven Joyce, and disagreeing with Mike Lee, on a transport matter – but hey, I guess one can always be surprised. Yesterday, the government announced that the transport arm of the future Auckland Super-City will be established along similar lines to ARTA, and will be called the “Auckland Transport Agency”, or ATA for short I suppose.…

Council Supports Waterview Connection

Unsurprisingly, although perhaps a little disappointingly, Auckland City Council will support the new alignment of the Waterview Connection, as proposed by NZTA in May. I did about a million posts on the topic at the time (and ended up rather sick to death with the whole issue to be honest), but it is interesting to see how things have progressed since the first days of shock when it was announced that we wouldn’t be getting the full tunnel option, but rather a half-tunnel, half-surface option.…

The Transport Funding Farce (and how to fix it)

It’s comparatively very easy to come up with plans and strategies when it comes to transport planning. While reading through ARC transport committee agendas has to rank up there with watching grass grow and paint dry as one of the more boring things that one can possibly do, it is becoming obvious (to me at least) that the strategies are heading in the right direction in terms of promoting a greater focus on public transport and, hopefully, eventually reducing our auto-dependency.…

Further Auckland Transport Plan Analysis

OK I admit it: I was really harsh on ARTA yesterday, calling the Auckland Transport Plan – their flagship transport document for the next 10 years – an “epic fail”. The main reason I admit to being harsh on ARTA is because they would probably agree with me that the bits I pointed out as being pathetic, are most certainly pathetic in their eyes too.…
