  1. I used it out of the blue, just recently. No idea why. Curious i guess. A glass roof would be cool and make the journey worthwhile. Interactive art as you walk along, providing illumination as you go?

  2. Used it this evening when transferring from the train to the Northern Express. Always use it when going this way and never use it (unless it is wet) going from bus to train. However at 630pm today there were significant numbers of people using it heading to the train so it does have its use. Pity there wasn’t a connection to the ferry terminal as well.

  3. I think it’s ok. Connection to ferry or queen st would be better. But this one is useful. I prefer it to the road cause it’s stressful dodging buses.

  4. Great for me when I used to get off of the Northern Express a bottle of wine in at 11pm and needing the station toilets!

  5. This access is a typical example of the cost cutting that happened when Britomart was built. The obvious connections were to the ferry building and to the Queen St footpaths south of Customs St. Instead we got an exit in the square and the concourse that is supposed to shelter us from the rain but fails dismally for very obvious reasons. I hope that with the rebuilding of Downtown Shops there wil be an improvement …. But I won’t hold my breath.

    1. If John Banks had had his way the whole thing would have been canceled, it would be fascinating to know whether we’d have had any of the planned rail upgrades if that had happened. Or whether we’d still be arguing over bringing trains back into the city. Wouldn’t surprise me if they’d just been pulled up and replaced with busways.

      1. And I suspect that had Labour not initiated the process for the Auckland and Wellington rail upgrades before they got tipped out of govt in 2008, National would never have embarked on any of it. Neither would NZ’s rail system have been re-nationalised. The “might have been” scenarious for Auckland, Wellington, and NZ Rail as a whole are positively scary. As indeed they continue to be as long as National remains in govt.

      2. “if they’d just been pulled up and replaced with busways.”

Which then would have been changed to transit lanes.

  6. Yes, the cut backs were due to the old Citizens and Ratepayers (C & R) side not wanting to spend a few dimes to make the passages really usefull. The same type of thinking is still alive and well now with Cameron Brewer, Dick Quax and co hating to spend on PT.

  7. I call this tunnel “Advert Alley” – the sheer number of ads lining the walls is ridiculous. It was OK when used for Wearable Arts photography for a few weeks, but has since reverted to said ridiculousness.

  8. “and no escalators…
..” there’s a lift for those who are unable to use the stairs (mainly AGGS girls, from daily observation).

  9. Should’ve been through to Downtown to so one could walk right into the shopping centre, just like what happens in Japan. Shows how pathetic Westfield is that they didn’t pickup on this or the overbridge opportunity at Henderson. They probably thought like the C&R Auckland City Council of the time that Bmart would just be a white elephant no one used. Saddest things for me are 1) that the nice crepe shop, Great Crepes, didn’t last. Much better than the Subway that replaced it, and 2) The water feature didn’t work permanently. That was original, creative, and cool….Maybe one day.

    1. Don’t worry we are now in good hands because Westfield’s former GM Design Rod Marler is working for Waterfront Auckland. That’s the guy that wants to put back the shed where the cloud is. A genius.
