  1. What a great idea for what has to be Auckland’s greatest disaster when it comes to public spaces. I hope this is going to be on going for artists to display and sell their art.

    1. I disagree this has been a great disaster at all. It’s a huge improvement over what was there before, and it’s now a route I usually take when cycling up Queen Street or walking towards or away from Aotea Square. It’s had a massive effect on opening up the entrance to the Library and it’s often full of people sitting on the stairs in the sun, or walking through. Lorne Street here used to be somewhere simply to stop and drop off a book, never a destination, that has changed since being shared. It’s also slowed car speeds on Rutland Street, and the whole area feels much more friendly and walkable, it used to be quite different.

    2. Have a look at that Rutland Street – Lorne Street cross of streets and then go onto street view, it’s actually hard to believe when looking at the before how much land is wasted on oversized roads and parking.

    3. By no means a disaster, but it will always be handicapped to some degree as long as the St James side is sitting on mothballs.

  2. Yes, the new treatment of this space is great, but it needs the return of the St James to life to really work. One whole side of the space is blank. The revival of the St James is next great place making treasure for midtown it will pull together the Art Gallery/Albert Park with Aotea Sq. Of course the removal of the pointless driving around of private cars through here, especially on Queen will also be great and necessary.

The St James must be a Council priority.

    1. I agree Patrick. There is so much focus on Wynyard, entirely justified, that other important parts are being forgotten. The loss of the St James due to inaction would be a travesty.

      1. The focus on Wynyard is driven by Waterfront Auckland whose mandate is the waterfront. I don’t think the council itself has much of a focus on anything.

  3. Loved the campaign and pictures. Good idea to get some life on that empty wall.

I too wonder why did Lorne st get no trees?

      1. Cars you mean? The letter artwork has been boarded up for several weeks now because car users have been driving into it (wrecking it) and then have the gall to complain of damage to their vehicles.

        1. How dare the council put a stationary traffic calming measure on a street! The indignity. (sarcasm)
