A month ago the council launched a youth video competition asking for ideas from people under 25 on the future of Auckland. They have narrowed the list down to 5 instead of the 3 like they initially suggested. The goal was to respond to one of the following three questions.

Auckland is set to grow from 1.5m to 2.5m people in 30 years…

  • What do you want Auckland to be like in 30 years?
  • What makes Auckland special and how do we protect it as we grow?
  • How can we make sure more people makes this a more exciting place to live?

The video with the most views by 31 May wins.

  1. In a way, a strange way to choose a winner as the only way to make a judgement is to watch them all. So the score is 1 each. I guess you watch them all and then watch your favourite again. For what it’s worth, I thought that No.1 dealt with the 3 objectives in the best way and so that would get my vote. Interesting that they ALL indirectly or directly promoted the role of better public transport in the growth of Auckland.

    1. Yes they all seemed to want better PT and interestingly all seemed to focus their videos on the CBD and waterfront, likely a reflection of the parts of the region they find most interesting.

  2. The last video has a Bruce Lee painting which is quite appropriate considering his philosophy of being adaptive like water and not to limit yourself to a single ideology/method/specific teaching, knowing your strengths and focus on how to use them efficiently to achieve your outcome. He also believed offence is a good defence, being able to defend and attack at the same time.

  3. I’ve watched all of them now. Most of them seem to be only discussions of what they like about current day Auckland (“multiculturism”) and therefore fail the “What do you want Auckland to be like in 30 years?” question.

Number 1 (“Auckland is grey and boring for families”) contradicts Number 2 (“Auckland is never boring for families”), and I agree with Number 2. Number 4, which I think is supposed to be set in 2043, promotes the idea that future Aucklanders will sleep fully clothed. Which is an idea that I don’t think will appeal to everybody, even if it is more efficient in enabling you to leave your home quickly so that you can get down to Wynyard for your busking gig. Apparently skateboards will be the most widely used form of transport in the Auckland of 2043. According to Number 4, we’ll either hold the America’s Cup in 2043. Or we’ll still be trying to win it back. Probably the latter.

I think Number 1 and Number 4 best address the future of Auckland question. They’re both very unambitious, listing a variety of improvements we should be planning for completion by 2020 at the latest. More rubbish bins and clean drinking water?… Seriously! I think Number 1’s discussion of the issues is better, but I like Number 4’s video production. I can’t decide between them.

  4. Both number 2 and 5 cover areas of sustainablity, vibrancy and social activity which I like. Productivity and economic activity and sustainability not covered as much if at all.

  5. Well the 3 questions one of which was to be addressed were:

What do you want Auckland to be like in 30 years?
What makes Auckland special and how do we protect it as it grows?
How can we make sure more people make this a more exciting place to live?

I think the 3rd video addressed question 2 best. A comment from a youth viewer also rates it best. It connects with young people. It gets my vote. http://youtu.be/cd6qzX9MrbA
