Auckland Transport has confirmed that the proposed changes to the 020 route, including shifting its terminus back to Westmere shops, will occur on February 7th. Here’s what the 020 route will be:
The proposed 020X route has also been finalised – to operate as every second run during peak times. It will follow this route:
As always, there’s no perfect route – with this result being a balance between restoring accessibility to K Road from Grey Lynn while providing a quick trip at some times of the day for commuters who value speed. In an ideal world the 020 route wouldn’t be quite so indirect, and it will be interesting to follow whether there are any future changes to speed it up a bit.

Forgive my ignorance Jarbs but where was the 020 terminus before? I thought it always was the Westmere Shops? Is it no longer starting at stop 8492?
Some locals were complaining about it being turned around on local roads, so they pulled it back to further up the road than the Meola Rd roundabout so the bus could use the roundabout to turn around.
It seems like logic has prevailed though and the needs of the masses put ahead of a few locals having to deal with the horror of an occasional bus going along their street.
Thanks Jarbs, so that sorts one stone out, but there are plenty of other egsamples or sheer stupidity with regards to turnarounds (such as New North Rd and Sandringham Rd buses starting and finishing on the mess we call Victoria St yet travelling nearly a kilometer just to turn around, and the 009 being the only bus through Blockhouse Bay that doesn’t actually call into the shops, yet it has been promoted to Locals to be a “Shopper style service”)…
Finally a sensible express route into town – the top of Wellington St is a nightmare for buses, so slow. Hopetoun bridge makes much more sense.
If the purpose of the 020X is to restore connectivity to K’ Rd, then it is a fail. There are no bus stops anywhere near K’Rd. The driver let me off on yellow lines this morning. I would have thought part of the plan would be a bus stop on Hopetoun at a minimum.
Aha! I geddit now. If you want to go to K’Rd, take the 020…
