Here’s a great video on all the different types of bike lanes that New York City is implementing:
I like the idea of tailoring the type of bus lane to the specific situation. In particular, if we can avoid the situation we ended up with over the Dominion Road debacle – and provide both on-street parking and cycle-lanes – then I think implementation will be that much easier.
It’d take a bit of getting used to with all the different signs and road markings, but the seperated bike lanes look awesome. If the cycle lane is seperated either through barriers or the parking lane then cars will have to take extra caution when taking a left turn. I’ve been knocked off my bike many times cycling down dominion road due to drivers not checking their blind spots and making a left turn, side swiping me in the process, suppose I’m lucky to still be able to cycle..
Facebook Friend Riding bike to Uni in the bus lane (where bikes are allowed to be) dude pulls out almost hits me i beep at him he swears at me, and the lights hes swearing his head off, I say I’m allowed to be there get fucked and he tries to turn his van into my bike at the lights. I punch his wing mirror and smash it HAHA.

Road rage doesn’t do much to help relations between motorists and cyclists.
What the van driver did was wrong, but swearing at him just escalates the situation and won’t educate the van driver one bit.
That van driver, having had his wing mirror smashed by a cyclist, will now hate cyclists even more, which may have increased the likeliness of him colliding with one.
Last week when I got cut off by a vab passing me then immediately dipping into a kerbsite park went like this:
Me: “Hey, careful!”
Driver: “Oh – sorry”
Me: “Ok thanks”
Brief, but neither of us left angry.
Even if your van driver started agro, saying “you nearly hit me” rather than “f*ck off!” does drop the likelihood of him remaining agro.
No bike helmets?
As far as I know, NZ and Australia are the only two countries in the world to legally require bike helmets.
