A few months ago we asked for your help, and you answered.

Thanks to the generous support we received, you may have noticed a more consistent and diverse stream of content over the last few months – which is in large part due to us being able to pay for editorial work. Significantly, this has also given us some capacity and breathing room to actively explore how Greater Auckland can grow to reach a wider community of readers, so we can sustain longer-term conversations and campaigns that help make our city better.

As part of this, we’ve been more active lately on social media, such as Twitter, Bluesky, and LinkedIn – and other work has been happening in the background to ensure our mission stays sustainable (more on that soon).

Given the impact we’ve had over the years, it’s important to us to make sure any changes we make will strengthen rather than jeopardise our core vision of helping Auckland become a better place to live in, to move around, and to connect with others. So each step is being undertaken thoughtfully, with some help and advice from fellow independent media outlets.

Today, we are excited to announce we are expanding to Substack, where we’ll be cross-posting our daily stories, along with the Weekly Roundup.

To be clear: we’ll keep releasing our posts on this website now and in the future, as we strongly value keeping the Greater Auckland archive accessible and independent.

That said, expanding to Substack allows us to achieve a few important things:

  • Firstly, it provides another platform to grow our readership – increasing our impact, and widening our reach to new and diverse audiences.
  • Secondly, it gives us more ways to engage with our community of readers and expand our coverage of the issues that matter to you.
  • Thirdly, it allows us to offer additional features for those who support us – such as community chat-rooms, webinars, events, and more.
  • Finally, it gives you, our readers, yet another way to share our stories with people you think may be intrigued!

We’ll be starting out slow, and there are bound to be some bumps along the way, but we are excited at the possibilities and hope you’ll join us on this journey in whatever ways suit you.

For those generously supporting us right now with a recurring donation, we’d be very happy to transfer your support to a Substack subscription if that works best for you. Handily, Substack uses the same payment processor (Stripe) as our website, so this allows us to make this change at the back-end. Reach out to us if you’d like to make this switch.

And to all of our amazing readers and community, thank you again for all your support – both moral and financial – that has enabled our work over the years. We’d love to hear any feedback or suggestions you might have, and we look forward to exploring these new horizons with you all.

  1. First of all, thanks to a group of people contribute to this great web page. My suggestion to make this great place to reflect the Greater Auckland are :

1 Cover more on the living cost of Auckland, like how our tax was spent, how each project cost by the Auckland Council.
    2. Cover more on the efficiency of the Auckland Council, like how much time it takes to repair a short road, how much time it takes to recover from accident.

    Regards..

  2. Thanks for all the good work guys

I do tend to link to Greater Auckland on Reddit, so would also welcome Greater Auckland presence on r/Auckland subreddit

On the negative side; I am bitterly disappointed with the results of the Entrust election. ~9% turn out and no-change, feels to me like incumbents see lack of public engagement and voting as a feature and not a failure of the system.

Anecdotal feedback on Reddit, was that some people (like myself) didn’t get voting papers until we chased up, others got them too late and others simply don’t use post any more.

I am hoping in three-years time, well before the entrust dividend is paid and elections held, that some pressure is applied to use the dividend data to enroll people to be able to vote online.

    1. Yes, “some people (like myself) didn’t get voting papers until we chased up, others got them too late”. I know a few people to whom this happened, too.

Last time, Entrust said they’d do better. Crazy we have an Electoral Commission but this kind of deliberate unprofessionalism continues for local utilities.

As you say, “incumbents see lack of public engagement and voting as a feature and not a failure”.

What a mess the Neoliberals leave every time things get carved up.

Thanks to the Better For Auckland candidates.

  3. Can you give indications on what sort of articles you would like to see people submit and what sort of stuff you probably don’t want submitted?

I’ve sent in the odd idea/article but no feedback. The last one didn’t even get read (according to my weblogs).

  4. Welcome to Substack, Greater Auckland.

Appreciate your work and your data driven views and approach. I can see why you get so much support and well done for providing quality analysis.

  5. As we are Greater than any other part of this country, it is excellent that our readership is expanded, so that we become even Greaterer!

    bah humbug

  6. Your longevity is impressive and appropriately guarded. We’ve just had a fully digital news outlet close in Otago, so we are beholden to Allied Press once more.

Good on you for the careful expansion.

And so good to see those tanks cleared off Wynyard Point Mr Reynolds.
