Indeed. I rode from Parnell to St Heliers with family on Sunday – it’s a lovely trip but the cycle path is a disaster for anyone wanting to travel faster than walking pace, particularly at Mission Bay (but with some nasty little choke points at Kohi too). Roll on a boardwalk extension over the seawall, the whole way along…
The tram suggestion is a great one – set it up and set a minimal price to encourage people to park and ride from further out – it’d be a hit.
What a lot of these photos illustrate is how many people there are walking around and how little of the street is given over to them. Once again metal boxes take priority over flesh and blood humans. This is why our urban environments are so crap.
We are so lucky that the natural environment of the city compensates to some extent, though our enjoyment of that is also curtailed by the barrier of cars between us and the water.
I was also here on the weekend. Lots of cyclists. Bike lanes that are good in places and then disappear or stop. e . But one other opportunity I noticed was the Yacht club has a generous car park that was completely empty. Private companies should be encouraged to let over their parking when their business is closed. A simple sign, private parking on one side, and then spin it to public parking if the business is not open. Especially in places where it is geographically tricky, and space is at a premium. No reserved parking – use it or lose it. Let’s use the space we have well, before making more car parks. Even if the company charges for it.
Presume you are talking about Royal Akarana Yacht Club. They already offer metered public parking; go in the main drive, turn first left and through the first section of parking.
