  1. I see the Herald can’t not vent its anti-rail bias, even in a situation as entrancing as this. Its caption to a slightly blurry photograph of the same event (Weekend Herald 9 June 2012, p. A13) shown in the video is described as ‘KiwiRail attempts to clear the track through heavy snow’; the snow clearance wasn’t an ‘attempt’, it was a success. This implied slight echoes its claim earlier in the week that rail services along with roads, airports, etc, were disabled by the snow when, it appears, they weren’t.

    1. Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence :p

They probably just did their ‘reporting’ by copying the video description, which states:
“Kiwirail attempting to plow a route through to Christchurch today from Arthurs Pass made for some spectacular images. 07 June 2012”

  2. That train crew were bloody lucky that the locos didnt derail because of the volume / weight of snow they were pushing through. Get snow ploughs made up to fit onto the front of locos Kiwirail and have them sitting in sheds in the appropriate locations around the South Island. Simple snow plough attachments could be machined up by Hillside Engineering real easy and cheaply.

  3. Nice Vids: Suggestion for KiwiRail – paint the loco up nice & reshoot – these shots have awesome NZ & Kiwi rail promo potential
