Today, Saturday 16th of November, is Auckland Transport’s Bus Driver Appreciation Day!

Saturday 16 November marks the third annual Auckland Transport (AT) ‘Bus Driver Appreciation Day’, and this year we are encouraging all of New Zealand to thank their driver or let the bus go first if you are in a vehicle on the road as a united show of appreciation.

Acting Mayor Cllr. Desley Simpson says “let’s take a moment to really appreciate Auckland’s bus drivers, the dedicated individuals who keep our city moving day and night.

“Rain or shine, they ensure we get to our destinations, often with a friendly greeting and a steady hand on the wheel. Their hard work and commitment make Auckland a more connected, accessible, and vibrant place for all.”

This year local councils in Bay of Plenty, Wellington and Christchurch are all supporting the initiative and will be showing their appreciation of drivers and the important job they perform.

On average, bus drivers in Auckland transport between 225,000 and 250,000 passengers every week day, helping reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions, as well as getting you to where you need to go.

So don’t forget to thank your driver for all of the amazing mahi they do getting us around our city!

And from all of us at Greater Auckland:

Thank you, driver!

  1. Yes. Stop thinking about ourselves in every situation and be aware others are part of our lives. A simple Thankyou shows we are aware and appreciate the part other people play in our daily life.
    Everyone’s job is important.
Bus drivers see a lot of life on a long day.
Be cheerful and smile. It costs nothing.

  2. While we Wish them Happy Drivers Day
Let me remind them that they need to collect revenue and not offer free bus rides to tourists from Airport to Queen Street I have seen many bus drivers allow passengers to travel free Its Tax payers who have to pay for negligence

  3. Yes. Please and Thank you go a long way. We might have less disruptions with services if drivers feel more positive about coming to work.

  4. I don’t see why it is so hard for NZ to pass a law that requires other vehicles to give way to buses as is common overseas. Would speed up many bus journeys considerably without making much difference to other drivers.

    1. Yes but cars. What are you, a communist?

Remember how the government is upping speed limits and pulling out pedestrian crossings? You could ask them what they think of buses going first.

      1. Overall I like the concept of letting busses go and often do so myself. Having visited NSW where it is law most of the time it seems to work ok although I would argue sometimes it creates an unsafe situation where cars slam on the breaks as they see the double hazards come on and think they might get fined. Obviously a bit of flexibility with enforcing this law would be the right way to go about it so I say definitely bring the law in!
